Gokulam Kerala FC win 3-2 on penalties to reach the Durand Cup 2019 finals on saturday at the Vivekananda Yuvabharati Krirangan.

East Bengal’s Mehtab Singh got a red card in the penultimate part of the injury time of the game. East Bengal played the extra time with ten players.

“I think the penalty changed the game… It was a clear penalty but there are some doubts over the double sanction – a red card and a penalty. Fifa has made some changes to this rule, right?” the East Bengal coach pointed out.

East Bengal had to play the entire half hour of extra time with 10 men after defender Mehtab Singh was red-carded for pulling rival striker Henry Kisekka down from behind, resulting in a penalty in the second minute of stoppage time, thus giving Kerala FC a lifeline through Marcus Joseph’s conversion.

The previous ‘triple punishment’ rule meant that a player – when he denied an opponent a goal-scoring opportunity – was automatically sent off and handed a suspension, besides a penalty being awarded as well.

Alejandro Menendez was happy with the fighting spirit shown by his men, but questioned some of referee Tejas Nagvenkar’s decisions after East Bengal lost the Durand Cup semifinal to Kerala FC in a penalty shootout.
