GACKT’s New Netflix Thriller Proves Lawyers Can Be Anti-Heroes Too

Netflix’s Japanese drama takeover continues, and this time it’s bringing rock star turned actor GACKT into a courtroom like no other. “Black Trick: The Lawyer Who Controls Justice” has just landed international streaming rights on Netflix, and it’s shaping up to be one of the platform’s boldest legal thrillers yet.

Produced by Fuji TV, the show follows Naoto Uramawashi, a genius who’s both a brilliant lawyer and a first-class architect — an unusual combination that becomes his greatest weapon. Set in a world where public opinion is easily shaped by media and online noise, Naoto steps in whenever innocent people get wrongly branded as criminals or powerful figures manipulate evidence to dodge accountability. Using his architecture firm as a covert task force, he builds elaborate “false blueprints” to expose his enemies’ lies from the inside out. His guiding principle is blunt: if the truth is being buried under lies, he’s willing to fight fire with fire.

It’s less a traditional courtroom drama and more a psychological chess match — smart, morally gray, and unapologetically stylish, much like the network’s earlier hits “Confidence Man JP” and “Asagao – Forensic Doctor,” both helmed by the same director, Toshiyuki Mihashi.

GACKT: Overview

This marks GACKT’s first-ever lead role in Fuji TV’s coveted Monday 9 PM “Getsuku” primetime slot — a launching pad historically reserved for major star vehicles in Japanese television. It’s also his debut drama for the network entirely, adding extra weight to the casting choice.

“Black Trick” arrives as part of a much bigger wave of licensed Japanese content Netflix has been rolling out globally this year, joining recent weekly favorites and expanding the platform’s growing footprint in the world of Japanese television drama — a format known for tightly plotted seasons and strong genre storytelling that’s increasingly finding international audiences through streaming.
