Frenkie De Jong transfer news: Barcelona and Man Utd make first contact for €80m move

Barcelona are in talks with Manchester United over a potential move for Frenkie De Jong in the summer. The Dutch international has not hit the heights that were expected out of his ambitious transfer from Ajax. And according to some sources, Barca are willing to cash in on him before his value drops any further.

One of the driving forces behind the exit rumours of the player is Barcelona’s difficult financial situation. They will have a very limited budget to work with at the end of the season, and are looking at De Jong’s transfer as a way to get new players and revamp the squad.

Frenkie De Jong could reunite with Erik Ten Hag at Man Utd

While contact has been made between the two clubs, there is nothing advanced in the transfer negotiations as of yet. The price at which Frenkie De Jong will be sold is the main point of discussion. A fee worth €70-80 million is being estimated for the transfer.

During his time at Ajax, De Jong emerged as one of the top young midfielders in the continent. He helped his side progress to the semifinals of the 2019 Champions League as well, which earned him the big move to transfer.

A reunion with Erik Ten Hag – the manager that got the best out of him – at Manchester United could be on the cards if he agrees to leave. However, Champions League football is his priority, and United cannot offer that next season. The situation is still quite open and could change in the coming days.
