Four Hands, Two Sonatas: Song Kang’s New Drama Turns Friendship Into Competition

Some rivalries are born from ego. Others grow quietly out of love for the same thing. tvN’s upcoming drama Four Hands, Two Sonatas leans hard into the second kind, and its newly released teaser shows exactly how a beautiful friendship can slowly turn into something far more complicated.

What’s the Drama About?

The title comes from a real piano term — “four hands” refers to two people playing a single piano together, a fitting metaphor for a story built on connection and competition in equal measure. Four Hands, Two Sonatas follows a group of students at an arts high school as they grow from teenagers into professional pianists, tracing how friendship, love, and rivalry evolve alongside their music.

At the center are Kang Bi Oh (Song Kang), a disciplined perfectionist who declares he’d “rather quit than remain a mediocre pianist,” and Choi Jung Yo (Lee Jun Young), a transfer student whose raw, emotionally vibrant playing draws instant praise — including from his own grandfather, a world-renowned conductor who calls him “pure instinct.” Rounding out the trio is childhood friend Hong Jae In (Jang Gyuri), who watches the bond between the two boys slowly shift from camaraderie to quiet rivalry.

Four Hands, Two Sonatas – Overview

Why This Teaser Is Striking a Chord

What makes the teaser compelling isn’t just the music — it’s the emotional contrast between the two leads. Kang Bi Oh represents discipline and control, meticulously studying every note, while Choi Jung Yo represents instinct and raw talent that seems to come effortlessly. That tension between hard work and natural gift is a classic setup, but the drama seems set to explore it with real nuance rather than easy answers, especially as their once-close friendship starts to fray.

Song Kang continues to diversify his range with this project, while Lee Jun Young brings momentum from his recent role in Reborn Rookie, and Jang Gyuri follows up her turn in The Player 2: Master of Swindlers. Together, they’re shaping up to be one of the more emotionally layered ensembles on tvN this season.
