Sandiyar: Kamal Haasan’s Gritty Madurai Action Drama Gets a Fierce First Look

A day before his 72nd birthday, Kamal Haasan has given fans an early gift. His next film is officially titled Sandiyar, and the first-look poster is already setting social media on fire. For more South cinema updates, keep following Technosports.

Sandiyar : Overview

The First Look: Raw, Restrained, Intense

The poster shows Kamal with a grey beard, a curled moustache and a buzz cut. He gazes through a car window with a firearm in hand, and the backdrop hints at a dramatic turn of events. Nothing in the poster looks polished or glamorous, and that seems to be the point.

A Title With History

Here is the fun part. “Sandiyar” generally means a fierce or formidable person, and Kamal once planned to use it for a film he wrote and directed in the early 2000s. After objections from certain groups, he dropped it and released the film as Virumaandi. That film became a Tamil cinema cult classic, known for its Rashomon-style storytelling. Two decades later, the title finally gets its moment.

What We Know About the Story?

Details are thin, but reports suggest a grounded Madurai-set action drama with no dance sequences and no CGI de-aging. The makers also reportedly want an actress closer to Kamal’s own age as the female co-lead. Treat these as unconfirmed until the team says otherwise.

Anirudh Returns to Kamal’s Corner

Anirudh Ravichander composes the songs and background score, reuniting with Kamal after Vikram and Indian 2. Given how their earlier collaborations sounded, expect a loud, textured score to carry the action.

Kamal Haasan’s Packed Road Ahead

Sandiyar joins a crowded slate. He was last seen in Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life. Next up are a big reunion with Rajinikanth, tentatively titled KHxRK and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, plus Kalki 2 and Indian 3, which is reportedly eyeing a Summer 2027 release.
