Algeria and Austria produced an incredible finish as both secured the point they needed to reach the World Cup knockout stages. Sasa Kalajdzic scored a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer as the two nations played out a highly entertaining 3-3 draw in their final Group J clash at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

In front of 69,045 fans, both teams found late drama. Algeria led 3-2 entering stoppage time, only for Austria to level with practically the last touch. Algeria bossed the ball and stitched long passing moves, while Austria replied with quick transitions, set-piece pressure, and a big aerial presence. Referee Ilgiz Tantashev kept a light touch on a fast-paced game, showing only one yellow card throughout the evening.

The result sees both teams progress into the knockout stages, setting up massive ties for the round of 32.

Austria threatened the opening goal early. Xaver Schlager could only fire over the crossbar, but his eighth-minute shot was the first within the opening 10 minutes for his team at this year’s World Cup. In the 28th minute, Marko Arnautovic raced onto David Alaba‘s lofted pass over the top of the Algerian defense before prodding a right-footed effort past goalkeeper Oussama Benbot. The goal was a monumental one for the veteran striker. At 37 years and 70 days old, Arnautovic became the oldest Austrian to start a World Cup match, surpassing Michael Konsel (36 years and 109 days against Italy in 1998).

With his second goal of the 2026 tournament, Arnautovic joined Lionel Messi, Roger Milla, and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players in history to score multiple World Cup goals at 37 or older. He also became the first player aged 37 or older to record both a goal and a yellow card in the same World Cup match.

Arnautovic almost doubled his tally moments later but dragged his shot wide of the left post. At the other end, Algeria’s Farès Chaïbi struck the upright with a long-range thunderbolt.

Algeria eventually got themselves level on the stroke of half-time. Captain Riyad Mahrez brilliantly kept the ball in play, allowing Rafik Belghali to cut inside and fire into the roof of the net. In doing so, the 24-year-old (24 years, 20 days) became the youngest player to score for Algeria at the FIFA World Cup since their tournament debut in 1982, when both Rabah Madjer (23y 183d) and Lakdhar Belloumi (23y 169d) scored against West Germany.

Second Half: A Frantic 45 Minutes

Austria retook the lead 10 minutes after the break. Konrad Laimer‘s lay-off in the right channel was met by Marcel Sabitzer, who curled an exquisite right-footed strike from the edge of the box into the top-right corner. It was Sabitzer’s ninth goal from outside the box for Austria—more than twice as many as any other Austrian player since 2019.

However, Ralf Rangnick’s side’s lead lasted only five minutes. Houssem Aouar made an explosive run down the left before rolling it across the goal for Mahrez, who tapped in at the back post with his left foot.

At 35 years and 121 days, Mahrez had already become the oldest player to ever start for Algeria in a World Cup match. This was just his second start at the tournament, with his first having come against Belgium back in 2014 before his rise to superstardom.

Mahrez thought he had won it for his country in the third minute of second-half stoppage time (90+3′) when he found the bottom-right corner from inside the box with his right foot after another Aouar feed. With that strike, Mahrez became the first Algerian player to score a World Cup goal at 32 years of age or older, and only the second Algerian to score multiple goals in a single World Cup match (joining Salah Assad in 1982).

Just when the points looked settled, Austria made one final surge. Michael Gregoritsch teed up Sasa Kalajdzic, who sent the Austrian supporters wild with a close-range header in the 96th minute to make it 3-3.

Kalajdzic scored just 61 seconds after coming on as a substitute. That was the third-fastest goal by a substitute in this year’s tournament and the eighth-fastest ever. The dramatic late header also ensured Austria became the very first team to avoid defeat in a FIFA World Cup match after conceding a go-ahead goal in the 90th minute or later.

Algeria have advanced to the knockout stage for the second time in their history, having also gone through with four points in 2014. They will now tee up a date with Switzerland.

Algeria’s progression also cemented a historic tournament for African football. They became the ninth African team to advance to the knockout round out of the 10 entrants from the continent (90%). Prior to 2026, Africa had never seen more than half of its teams advance out of the group stage.
