Fear Over Willpower: Is Lanterns Secretly Turning John Stewart Into a Yellow Lantern?

Some spoilers hide in plain sight for years. The theory doing the rounds is that Lanterns may turn John Stewart into a Yellow Lantern, and that James Gunn dropped the hint back in January 2023.

That was when Gunn unveiled the DCU Chapter 1 slate and confirmed a Hal Jordan and John Stewart story. There was no cast yet, so the promo leaned on comic art from Green Lantern: Earth One. In that story, John ends up wearing yellow.

Now he’s holed up somewhere with a forge and a terror-soaked atmosphere. Showrunner Chris Mundy has also talked about a “coaching tree,” meaning what Sinestro passed to Hal and, through Hal, to John. The finale may finally cash that in.

How It Could Play Out

1. Sinestro forges a ring for John. He becomes one of the Corps’ first recruits.
2. John takes the ring himself. He steals it while bringing Sinestro to justice.
3. Guy Gardner stays Earth’s Green Lantern. That keeps the Guardians’ one-Lantern-per-sector rule intact.
4. John returns to green in Season 2. His yellow chapter could then inform his appearance in Man of Tomorrow next July.

What About the Hal Jordan Parallax Theory?

Fans noticed plenty of yellow around Hal and guessed he might become Parallax, the fear entity. That idea looks weaker with each episode, especially after Hal’s unexplained death. John is now the stronger candidate for a fear-driven turn.

Conclusion

It’s a theory, and a good one, but the finale could still zig. What I like is how neatly it resolves the show’s central themes: fear, destiny, and what it really takes to wear a ring. If it happens, it’ll be a rare case of a spoiler hiding in plain sight for over three years.
