The 2022 Cold Case That Changes Everything
The BAU revisits a 2022 North Carolina murder that could be connected to Voit — a mother-daughter double murder case where DA Joy has Voit pegged as the top suspect after finding the mother’s car, the daughter’s body, and an empty kill kit.

But there’s a major problem. The scene doesn’t fit Voit’s MO. He doesn’t hurt children because he loves his daughters so much. Not only did Voit only confess to 63 murders, but the 2022 case wasn’t among those names.
So why would Voit take the blame? It is later revealed that Voit knows the risk of taking the blame — he wants to be put down for his crimes and pay the ultimate price. A chilling but deeply human motivation that makes Voit one of the most fascinating characters on television right now.
How the BAU Unravels the Truth
Rossi realizes that Voit used Gideon’s “I’m the unsub” method to solve the case from the real unsub’s point of view. They laid into Voit about who the real killer was, even though he wanted to go down for it — they couldn’t let another killer go free.
Rossi noticed the sister had removed every reminder of her lost sibling from her home. After hauling the husband into interrogation and getting nowhere, they sat Voit across from him. The husband spilled his guts, and the team finally pulled a confession out of the sister — she was jealous that their dying mother had left her sister everything, so she killed them both and framed her brother-in-law. When the DNA didn’t hold weight, they framed Voit.
The Creepy Fan Mail That Changes the Game
Just when things seemed to wrap up, Voit receives fan mail with someone typing out “I am not pathetic” on a typewriter over and over — alarming him and leaving viewers with plenty of questions. A shadow villain is clearly emerging.

JJ, Luke & Penelope — the Heartwarming Subplot
Not everything is dark and grim. JJ ends up staying with Penelope after a pipe breaks and floods her new place. Penelope and Luke surprise JJ and the boys with a full indoor camping trip — complete with a tent, chairs, a fishing pole, and an open flame grill set up. It’s the kind of warmth that makes longtime fans fall in love with this show all over again. Show Snob
Why Voit Is the Best Character on the Show
In the first season, Voit was a suburban family man who secretly ran a dark-web network of serial killers. Then he got caught. In the second season, he came in as a sort of Hannibal Lecter type, helping the BAU dismantle his own network. The brain injury in Season 3 made the empathy center of his brain functional again — and by Season 4, he’s clearly the best thing about this show, by a mile. Pajiba
