“Evil Dead Burn” Review: Brutal Gore Overpowers A Genuinely Compelling Family Horror Story

Some horror films know exactly what they want to be. “Evil Dead Burn” knows what it could have been — and that gap is exactly what makes it frustrating.

The film shifts the franchise away from its familiar cabin setting, placing the horror inside a fractured family carrying years of buried emotional baggage. Alice returns to her late husband’s ancestral home after his death, only to find a household held together by fear, resentment, and secrets — and the discovery of the Necronomicon unleashes Deadites on a family already falling apart from within.

Evil Dead Burn: Overview

What Works

Vaniček stages several genuinely disturbing sequences, and fans of the franchise’s trademark practical gore, makeup, and body horror will find plenty to admire. The film’s most ambitious idea — framing the Deadite outbreak as a mirror of a deeply dysfunctional family — gives the story real emotional weight, exploring inherited trauma and the desperate pressure to keep up appearances.

What Doesn’t Work

The screenplay repeatedly hints at digging into grief and toxic family dynamics, only to interrupt itself with another extended dismemberment sequence. The violence, however impressively executed, becomes repetitive over time, and the Deadites themselves feel less distinct than in previous franchise entries, rarely developing menace beyond screaming and attacking.

The Performances

Souheila Yacoub anchors the film with quiet resilience as Alice, while Hunter Doohan, Tandi Wright, and Luciane Buchanan each bring genuine emotional texture to a household that feels fractured long before the supernatural chaos begins.

Franchise reboots that try to root supernatural horror in real family dysfunction reflect a growing trend across modern horror film storytelling, which increasingly blends genre scares with psychological depth.

Conclusion

“Evil Dead Burn” delivers exactly the visceral gore franchise fans expect, but its stronger, more compelling story about family trauma gets buried under the bloodshed — leaving it a technically solid but emotionally underexplored entry in the series.
