The Hollywood strike led by actors and screenwriters has caused significant disruption to numerous productions. They are deeply concerned about the potential ramifications in the film industry, specifically regarding the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence to digitally clone actors and exploit their images indefinitely.

As part of the ongoing protests by actors, the Alliance of Film and Television Producers, one of the opposing parties involved in the strike, has put forth a proposal. This proposal suggests that actors categorized as “extras” during shoots could be scanned in a single day of work. The intention behind this proposal is for companies to utilize the digital “clones” of these actors not only for the specific production at hand but also for an indefinite period going forward.

Regrettably, the compensation for the actors involved in this arrangement would be limited to just a single day’s worth of work. Consequently, these actors would not be entitled to any additional earnings from subsequent productions in which their digitally generated “clone” created through artificial intelligence is utilized.

Fran Drescher, president of the SAG-AFTRA union has said, “The business model has changed because of streaming, digital content, and artificial intelligence. This is a historic moment. If we don’t stand firm now, we’re all going to be in trouble, we’re going to be at risk of being replaced by machines, and by companies that care more about Wall Street than you and your families”.

Furthermore, Drescher emphasized the detrimental impact this situation poses on the future prospects of these actors. Often, these actors take on extra roles not only to earn a modest income but also to establish their presence and build a reputation within the industry.

Moreover, even if these actors were to achieve success as prominent figures in production, the production companies would retain ownership of their digital “clone,” allowing them to exploit the actors’ accomplishments without any financial compensation.
