This week, Elon Musk made it official that he plans to create an AI project to compete with Google’s Bard and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is supported by Microsoft. The goal of Elon Musk’s AI project is to create a “truth-seeking” generative AI that will be more secure than current generative AI services.
“I am going to start something which I call ‘TruthGPT’, or a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe,” said Elon Musk in an interview with Tucker Carlson at Fox News. “It is simply starting late. But I will try to create a third option.” He also is reported to have said that, “AI is more dangerous than, say, mismanaged aircraft design or production maintenance or bad car production.”
Although the businessman withheld other information about his AI project from the interviewer, Elon Musk did express his concern over Microsoft’s level of control over OpenAI and the company’s strategy after it changed from being a nonprofit endeavour, according to Bloomberg.
Elon Musk also voiced concerns about chatbots being overly politically correct and stated that his own AI would focus on finding the truth, but he did not reveal how the AI does this.
The exact place of Elon Musk’s new AI venture within his business empire is still unknown, but it is anticipated to be a distinct entity from his other companies. Unofficial sources, however, point out that the company may use Tesla’s powerful computing capabilities and Twitter content for language model training.
Elon Musk is hiring AI engineers from top companies to build the AI startup, and about a dozen A-list AI experts have already joined. About 10,000 Nvidia compute GPUs were reportedly purchased for Musk’s AI project, which means hundreds of millions of dollars have already been spent on it. According to a Financial Times report, Musk is also reportedly in talks with investors from SpaceX and Tesla about financing this AI project.
