How the Case Reopened
Seven years after Sam Deshmukh’s accidental death, Vijay is a successful businessman who owns a movie theatre and dreams of producing a film. His family, though, still carries the trauma. The case stays quiet until a man named David is released from prison. Years earlier, while fleeing police, he had seen Vijay leaving a construction site with a shovel. Once free, he tells officers what he saw.
The case lands with IG Tarun Ahlawat (Akshaye Khanna), a psychologist who works with Sam’s grieving mother, Meera (Tabu). Rather than simply interrogate the family, Tarun decides to pressure them psychologically. He plants two undercover officers next door, and one becomes close to Nandini (Shriya Saran). In an emotional breakdown, Nandini unknowingly reveals the family’s secret, and the officers record it. Police also dig up a skeleton under the police station, exactly where David said Sam was buried, and arrest the family.
Vijay’s Masterstroke
To protect his wife and daughters from torture, Vijay signs a confession. That is when his years-long counterplan begins.
He had secretly worked with screenwriter Murad Ali, giving him a fictional story about a father protecting his daughter, which was published as a novel called Drishyam. In court, his lawyer argues that the police search mirrors the novel so closely that the confession could have been pressured.

The skeleton was the biggest danger, so Vijay had planned for that too. Through a morgue security guard, he had found another young man’s remains of similar age and build, and he had helped that poor family financially. He swapped Sam’s skeleton for the decoy. When the DNA test didn’t match Sam’s parents, the prosecution couldn’t prove the body’s identity. With the confession and recording challenged, Vijay got bail.
The Bittersweet Ending
Vijay’s victory had a human side. He secretly recovered Sam’s real remains, cremated them and anonymously sent the ashes to Meera and Mahesh Deshmukh. After seven years, the grieving parents finally found some peace. Vijay returned to his family, having protected them through a plan years in the making. The recap ends by noting that the family’s safety is once again under threat.
