Upcoming Apple iPad Air to Feature LCD Display

There was a previous belief that the 2024 12.9-inch iPad Air would include Mini-LED technology in its production. The former claimed that Ross Young, a CEO at DSCC, hinted at an iPad Air with a Mini-LED display. However, they now claim that Young has revealed new information from different sources suggesting that Apple has decided to switch to LCD production due to the manufacturing costs being increasingly prohibitive.

Nevertheless, the iPad Air is not the only model receiving a downgrade in terms of performance. Young reports that Apple is planning to release a new iPad with a Mini-LED display, scheduled to launch later in the 2024-year period. However, the company has not disclosed the model with potential designs including a variation of a low-end iPad Pro or a completely new addition to the line-up. There are currently no detailed tech specifications available for the device, as efforts to overhaul the iPad Air are still ongoing.

The new display technology represents the evolution of visual experience into the future. A Mini-LED display improves contrast and black levels compared to a traditional panel but is inferior to the vividness and accuracy of an OLED panel. The color representation improves significantly by allowing for more color mixing through precisely used lighting through many smaller LEDs.

The entry into the Mini-LED display on the 2021 iPad Pro indicates Apple’s quest for innovation. Nonetheless, the decision not to secure a similar design entry on the 2022 iPad Air shows a tactical position to manage production and market competitiveness. Thus, although a new iPad Air entree is not likely to achieve Mini-LEDs later in 2024, the implication is that Apple’s innovation journey in display technology remains on course, leaving the excitement of another new iPad model with a Mini-LED display later in 2024.
