Diego Godin is set to end his stint with Serie A club Cagliari. He will be joining Brazilian champions Atletico Mineiro in the upcoming days, once the final details have been agreed between the two parties.

The former Atletico Madrid man revealed that he would not be continuing with Cagliari earlier last month, but didn’t talk about his future destination. Now, it seems like a return to South America is on the cards for the Uruguayan centre-back.

Godin is a legend for Atletico Madrid, having spent nine years for the Rojiblancos between 2010 and 2019. After leaving the Spanish side, he joined Inter Milan in 2020, and spent one season with them before joining Cagliari in the summer of 2020.

He is Uruguay’s most capped player of all time, with 153 appearances for the national team. He also wears the captain’s armband for the team, and has won the 10/11 Copa America with them.

According to reports, Diego Godin will be offered a one-year contract by the winners of the Brazilian league. He will also have the option to extend for another year. The deal is in its final stages and it is expected to be completed soon.

Atletico Mineiro let go of Diego Costa recently, after terminating his contract and are now close to signing his defensive namesake as a free agent.
