Delhi On Edge: Inside the CJP Protest Standoff Gripping Parliament

Delhi’s Monsoon Session has turned into a full-blown political flashpoint. Two days after the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led student march to Parliament, the fallout is still unfolding — in the streets, in both Houses, and even at the Supreme Court.

What’s Happening on the Ground of CJP

The CJP-led protest against the alleged NEET-UG paper leak has continued steadily, with six FIRs filed so far over violence and vandalism during the march. Security has been ramped up sharply: the Centre has deployed 20 additional CRPF companies airlifted from West Bengal, joining roughly 30 companies of CRPF and Rapid Action Force personnel already stationed with Delhi Police. The Delhi Metro has shut down 16 stations across the city as a precaution, though interchange access remains open at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, and Central Secretariat.

Parliament in Chaos

Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned amid opposition uproar. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that protesting students were lathi-charged and tear-gassed, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju maintained the government is willing to hold a discussion on the NEET issue. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, dressed in black in solidarity with the students, accused the Speaker of blocking debate, saying democracy was being stifled.

The Supreme Court’s Response

A plea challenging police action during the protest was denied an urgent hearing. When the petitioner’s lawyer referenced video evidence of alleged police brutality, Chief Justice Surya Kant declined to view it, saying the court did not have time for that.

Why This Matters

Hunger strikes and mass demonstrations have long been part of India’s protest culture, echoing tactics used throughout the country’s history of civil disobedience movements, a tradition rooted in the broader legacy of nonviolent resistance in Indian politics. Whichever side one supports, the standoff underscores how examination integrity has become a flashpoint issue capable of disrupting national governance.
