DC’s Clayface Trailer Proves Body Horror Can Break Your Heart Too

Clayface, starring Tom Rhys Harries, marks DC Studios’ first in-universe horror film, and its second trailer leans hard into that promise. The story follows Matt Hagen, a famous, good-looking actor whose life implodes after he’s disfigured in an act tied to an affair involving the antagonist’s girlfriend. Unable to find justice or return to his old life, Matt turns to Dr. Caitlin Corr, a scientist working on an experimental treatment — one that comes with a horrifying price.

From Man to Monster

What starts as a hopeful fix quickly spirals. The trailer shows Matt’s face and body slowly turning into a mass of shifting clay, and as the transformation worsens, so does his psychological state. He descends into becoming a feared figure haunting Gotham City — a tragic villain born from desperation rather than malice. Clayface is drawn from the DC Comics universe, where the character has long stood as one of Batman’s most disturbing recurring adversaries.

The Team Behind the Horror

Directed by James Watkins, the film is written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan having pushed for a Clayface film since the DCEU days before pitching it to the newly formed DC Studios in 2023. Alongside Harries, the cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan. James Gunn, Peter Safran, Matt Reeves, and Lynn Harris produce.
