The first Edgerunners did more than tell a tragic story. It helped bring viewers back to Cyberpunk 2077 when the game badly needed a second chance. Season 2 doesn’t coast on that goodwill. What’s on Netflix rates it a perfect 5/5.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 : Overview

Detail	Info
Director	Kai Ikarashi (takes over from Hiroyuki Imaishi)
Studio	Trigger
Composer	Tsuneo Imahori
Setting	Night City
Cast	Entirely new main characters
Themes	Revenge, second chances, the death of film
Review score	5/5 (What’s on Netflix)

Meet the New Faces

Roman: A 12-year-old aspiring filmmaker with a fuzzy digital camera, and the heart of the season.
Weak Kingsley (“King”): A mercenary haunted by cyberpsychosis, a breakdown caused by too many cybernetic upgrades.
Talia: A teenager who falls in with the violent Maelstrom gang and may be heading down King’s path.
D: A former Nomad hunting those who destroyed his found family, who is also surprisingly goofy.

Style That Tells the Story

Roman films his subjects, so we often see them through low-resolution camcorder footage with blown-out colours, echoing 90s and 00s anime. Trigger mixes that with loose brushwork, split screens, overlapping eyes and shifting art direction. Cyberpunk elements shape the visuals too. One character’s cyberpsychosis appears as a glitching RGB screen, and a netrunner’s hacking shows up through camera moves.

It’s also bloody. There’s plenty of intense violence to keep things grounded, set to a loud, genre-hopping score.

The Heart Beneath the Chaos

In a world where people watch “braindance” experiences beamed straight to their eyes, Roman’s old-fashioned filmmaking becomes an act of empathy. The review argues that where season one found humanity in a doomed love story, season two finds it in the love expressed through a camera lens. Revenge and estranged families are familiar themes, but the storytelling makes them feel fresh.

Any Downsides?

The one knock: the season assumes you know the original series and the game, so newcomers may feel a little lost. Start with the first season, and read up on the show on Wikipedia if you need a refresher.
