What Sparked the Outrage

Episode 11 of Perfect Crown faced criticism for depictions that made the drama’s setting — a constitutional monarchy of South Korea — appear as if it were a vassal state of China. During the coronation ceremony, subjects shouted Cheonse (a thousand years) — a term used by vassal states — instead of Manse (ten thousand years), which is the symbol of an independent nation. Furthermore, Grand Prince Ian wore a guryumyeonryugwan (a crown worn by Chinese subjects) rather than the shipimyeonryugwan (a twelve-tasseled crown) worn by emperors of independent nations. soompi

For Korean viewers deeply attuned to the historical significance of such symbols, these weren’t minor costume or script errors — they struck at the heart of national sovereignty and identity. The backlash was swift and substantial.

Constitutional monarchy dramas set in alternate-history Korea carry particular cultural weight precisely because they reimagine Korean sovereignty — making historical accuracy in costume and ceremony critically important to audiences.

IU and Byeon Woo Seok Speak Out

Both stars took to Instagram on May 18 with personal, unscripted apologies — and the tone of each says a lot about who they are as public figures.

IU acknowledged that as a lead actress, she had a responsibility to scrutinise the script more carefully. She expressed that she should have studied more deeply before stepping into a drama built around Korean history and tradition, and pledged to approach future projects with greater caution.

Byeon Woo Seok shared a handwritten letter — a notably personal choice — admitting he had not thought carefully enough about the historical context of what he was portraying, and that the audience’s response had led him to genuinely reflect on his responsibility as an actor beyond just the performance itself.

The production team had already issued an official apology on May 16, stating they take the criticism that they undermined the nation’s sovereign status very seriously.

The Bigger Takeaway

This controversy, while painful for all involved, reflects something important about Korean audiences — they engage deeply with how their history and cultural identity are represented on screen, even in fictional alternate universes. For Perfect Crown, a drama that has dominated buzz rankings for five straight weeks, it’s a significant stumble heading into its final stretch.
