Chelsea vs PSG: Preview
The countdown is on for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final — a historic clash that marks the first time two teams from the same continent will contest the title.
That’s only possible because, for the first time ever, multiple clubs from one continent were allowed entry into the tournament. Still, it adds an extra layer of significance to an already momentous occasion.
Chelsea face Paris Saint-Germain at MetLife Stadium in what also becomes the first major international final between clubs from England and France.
Few would have predicted Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea reaching this stage, especially considering the formidable lineup of clubs at the outset. Yet, a mix of resilient performances, a favourable draw, and the timely addition of a £60 million striker have carried them to the brink of glory.
Awaiting them are none other than the reigning European champions — and arguably the world’s most in-form team — Paris Saint-Germain.
Under Luis Enrique, PSG have continued the dazzling run that saw them claim a historic treble (Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and Champions League). Despite a surprising 1-0 defeat to Botafogo in the group stage, they’ve powered through the competition, eliminating Atlético Madrid, Seattle Sounders, Inter Miami, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid — all without conceding a single goal and scoring 16 in the process.
Including their Coupe de France triumph, PSG have won their last five knockout matches with an astonishing aggregate score of 18-0. At this tournament alone, they’ve outclassed their last three opponents 10-0.
Their semi-final display was especially emphatic — a 4-0 demolition of Real Madrid at MetLife Stadium, where they raced to a three-goal lead within just 24 minutes.
Chelsea also stumbled in the group stage with a 3-1 defeat to Brazilian side Flamengo, but have since bounced back impressively. They’ve dispatched LAFC, ES Tunis, Benfica, Palmeiras, and most recently Fluminense to book their spot in the final.
The two sides last met in the Round of 16 of the 2015–16 UEFA Champions League, where PSG progressed with a 4-2 aggregate win.
This time, Chelsea will be hoping to draw inspiration from their strong track record in international finals. They’ve won each of their last five (excluding UEFA Super Cups) since 2013 — most recently a convincing 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League Final in May. Their last loss in an international final came during their maiden FIFA Club World Cup appearance, a narrow 1-0 defeat to Corinthians in 2012.
The opening 45 minutes could prove decisive, especially given PSG’s tendency to start matches at breakneck speed — as Real Madrid found out in the semi-final. The French champions have netted 10 first-half goals in this year’s Club World Cup, second only to Bayern Munich (11), while their 5.85 expected goals (xG) before halftime is bettered only by Manchester City (6.18).
However, Chelsea have proven rock solid in the early stages of games. They remain the only side in the tournament yet to concede a first-half goal and have allowed just 0.85 xG before the break — the lowest figure among all teams, despite playing more matches than most.
Another strength for the Blues has been their scoring diversity. Excluding own goals, nine different players have netted their last 10 goals in the competition. New signing João Pedro is the only player to have struck more than once, scoring a brace on his debut in the 2-0 semi-final win over Fluminense.
New signing João Pedro has made an instant impact in Chelsea colours, continuing the form he showed at Brighton. The Brazilian forward has now scored seven goals in his last nine starts across all competitions for both clubs. Should he start and net a brace on Sunday, he’ll become the first player since Gabriel Martinelli in 2019 to score two or more goals in each of his first two starts for a Premier League side.
Cole Palmer is another key threat PSG will need to contain. Only two players have created more chances from open play at this Club World Cup than the young Englishman, who has nine to his name. In the semi-final win over Fluminense, Palmer created three clear opportunities and completed all 27 of his passes — making him just the second player in the tournament to create 3+ chances and maintain 100% passing accuracy (20+ passes attempted), following Rayan Aït-Nouri’s display for Manchester City against Juventus.
PSG, of course, possess attacking firepower of their own, and none has been more prolific in 2025 than Ousmane Dembélé. His goal and assist in the 4-0 demolition of Real Madrid took his tally to 36 goal contributions this calendar year — 27 goals and nine assists — the most by any player across Europe’s top five leagues in 2025.
Bradley Barcola could also play a vital role if given the nod by Luis Enrique. Despite starting only 26 of PSG’s 41 matches this year, the 21-year-old has racked up 18 assists — four more than any other player from Europe’s top leagues. His rate of one assist every 129 minutes is unmatched in 2025.
PSG’s success, though, has come from more than just individual brilliance — it’s been a collective effort. In midfield, Vitinha has been especially dominant, completing 100 or more passes in five separate Club World Cup matches. The only other player to manage 100+ passes in more

Chelsea vs PSG: Team News and Predicted Lineup
Two European heavyweights meet in New York New Jersey to battle for the title of the first-ever FIFA Club World Cup champion. Both sides stumbled in their second group-stage matches — Chelsea falling to Flamengo and Paris Saint-Germain edged out by Botafogo — but have looked unstoppable in the games that followed.
Chelsea – Team News
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea booked their spot in the final with a clinical display, highlighted by a standout performance from João Pedro, who struck twice to dispatch Fluminense 2-0. Meanwhile, PSG made an emphatic statement of their own, dismantling Real Madrid 4-0 in a commanding semi-final display. However, with their match played a day later, the French side will enter the final with less time to recover.
Chelsea are set to receive a boost at the back with Levi Colwill returning from suspension and expected to partner Trevoh Chalobah in central defence. Another returning player, Liam Delap, may find opportunities limited, given the immediate impact João Pedro has made up front since his arrival.
Reece James could also feature from the start after making a late cameo in the previous round, though the Blues are sweating on the fitness of Moisés Caicedo, who sustained an ankle knock late in the semi-final.
João Pedro’s two-goal performance on his full debut against his former club has added a fresh dimension to Maresca’s attacking options — and potentially complicated his selection choices, particularly with so many promising young forwards at his disposal. With PSG’s lethal transition game in mind, balancing firepower with defensive discipline will be crucial.
Chelsea’s hopes may rest heavily on Cole Palmer, whose creativity and composure under pressure could prove decisive against a relentless PSG side hungry for silverware.
Chelsea – Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1)
- Goalkeeper – Sánchez
- Defenders – Gusto, Chalobah, Adarabioyo, Cucurella
- Midfielders – Palmer, Caicedo, Enzo
- Forwards – Nkunku, Pedro, Neto
“It is a great achievement. It has been a fantastic season – top four in the Premier League, Conference League and now in the final of this competition. We are so, so happy. We go game by game. Finally we have the last game of the season and hopefully we can win the tournament.” Enzo Maresca, Chelsea head coach
PSG – Team News
Luis Enrique is expected to stick with a largely unchanged lineup for the final, having found a winning formula in recent matches. With Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez still serving suspensions, Lucas Beraldo is set to retain his place alongside skipper Marquinhos at the heart of defence.
The midfield setup, featuring Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Fabian Ruiz, has provided balance and control throughout the tournament, while attackers Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia have cemented their roles with consistent performances across the last four fixtures.
Ousmane Dembélé, who made a strong impression with an hour-long outing against Real Madrid, is expected to lead the attack once again. The 27-year-old appears to be hitting peak form at the perfect time and will be aiming to add another standout display to his growing list of accolades in 2025.
With a youthful core that includes several breakout stars, PSG’s current run underscores the squad depth and long-term vision under Enrique’s leadership. Marquinhos remains the sole experienced figure in a starting eleven brimming with emerging talent — a clear signal of the club’s evolving identity and ambitions.
PSG – Predicted Lineup (4-3-3)
- Goalkeeper – Donnarumma
- Defenders – Hakimi, Marquinhos, Beraldo, Mendes
- Midfielders – Neves, Vitinha, Ruiz
- Forwards – Doue, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia
“We are in a special season, a special moment, and we have one more step against a very good team like Chelsea. Now it’s time to prepare. We want to make history for our club.” Luis Enrique, Paris Saint-Germain head coach
Chelsea vs PSS: Prediction
Red-hot Paris Saint-Germain have carried their blistering form through the sweltering American conditions, and their sharp interplay and high-intensity pressing could prove too much for Chelsea to cope with.
After eliminating the Blues from European competition in both 2015 and 2016, the in-form French champions look poised to inflict more heartbreak on the Londoners and secure a remarkable fourth piece of silverware in just three months.
Score Prediction: Chelsea 1-3 PSG
