UEFA and CONMEBOL have collectively announced the Club Challenge for 2023, where the Europa League winners, Sevilla, and the Copa Sudamericana winners Independiente del Valle will face each other in a one-off match. The game will take place at Sevilla’s home stadium, the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on July 19.
It will be the first of its kind, putting the two continental cup winners up against each other in an exhibition match. The match will take place over the traditional 90 minutes, with no extra time. If the scores are level by the time the 90 minutes are over, the game will go straight to penalties with no added time.
Club Challenge Match 2023: Sevilla to take on Independiente del Valle in exhibition
This edition of the Club Challenge will be called “Antonio Puerta XII” in honour of the former Sevilla player who died in 2007 of a cardiac arrest at the age of 22.
UEFA and CONMEBOL are now expanding on their collaborative list of matches, after establishing the Finalissima last year. The national teams that won their respective continental cups (Euros and Copa America) face off against each other as a Super Cup. And now, it is being applied to clubs as well.
As of yet, a competitive match between the Champions League and Copa Libertadores winners has not been announced yet. However, it seems only a matter of time before the top clubs from Europe and South America face each other in a regular manner.
