Claudio Ranieri has been named the new manager of Serie B side Cagliari, returning to the team after 30 years. He was previously in charge during 1988 to 1991, before managing other clubs such as Roma, Fulham, Watford, Juventus, AC Milan and most prominently, Leicester City, with whom he won the Premier League.
After being relieved of his duties by Watford, he is now back in the dugout in Italy. He has signed a contract with the club until 2025, with ambitions of making a return to the top flight.
Claudio Ranieri named new Cagliari manager
“I’m going back to Cagliari: I’ve always known it, I declared it even then, at the time of my departure,” the 71-year-old said on the club’s website.
“Cagliari made me understand that maybe I could make it in my job, I had found all the elements that helped me in those three years: fans, players, managers, we were all one.
“In these days you have helped me make this decision, which was not easy for various reasons. We are bound by mutual respect and love, many beautiful memories.”
During his previous spell in charge of the team three decades ago, he was able to lead them from Serie C, the third tier, to Serie A, in successive seasons. It might prove to be a difficult task right away, since the team is 14th in the second division of Italian football right now. But, you can never count a Claudio Ranieri team out, as history has proven before.
