Citadel Season 2 Ending Explained — Mason’s Shocking Death, Bernard’s Betrayal & What’s Next

Amazon Prime Video’s most expensive spy thriller is back — and the Season 2 finale doesn’t just raise the stakes, it blows them up entirely. Here’s everything that happened and what it means for the future of Citadel.

Citadel Season 2 Overview

What Happens in the Season 2 Finale?

The finale delivers a devastating blow to the spy world — the season reaches its breaking point as the hunt for mind-control technology ends with the shocking death of Mason Kane, killed by his own brainwashed wife, Abby.

Here’s how it unfolds: Bernard Orlick uses a man named Frank to infiltrate the G8 Summit security team. While Nadia is distracted, Frank kills Russian President Aronov using a needle to the heart — an act Bernard had secretly orchestrated all along, completely separate from the mission Nadia and Mason believed they were on.

After the assassination, Bernard reveals his full plan: with Aronov dead, the new Prime Minister can be negotiated with. Bernard’s goal was to keep the most dangerous satellites ever built out of the hands of the elite Manticore families. Flying on a plane, he instructs his team to destroy the satellites entirely — completing the deal to purchase them, only to blow them up. Free Press Journal

Mason Kane Is Dead — But Is It Really Over?

By the end of the finale, Mason appears to be truly dead — unlike many spy thrillers that leave room for surprise returns, the finale treats his death as permanent. Bernard later blames Joana for Mason’s death and kills her in revenge. thethoughtoftheday

After forcing Nadia to shoot her by moving close to her weapon, Abby also dies — believing there is no future left for her after Mason’s death, leaving behind their daughter Hendrix. thethoughtoftheday

Nadia’s Choice — Retirement or Round Three?

Two months later, Nadia visits Mason and Abby’s graves, where Bernard approaches her with a new offer. Disgusted by his willingness to sacrifice lives for the “greater good,” she refuses to work with him again — but before leaving, hands him a device with names of surviving Citadel operatives who can help destroy the remaining Manticore families.

The season ends with Nadia breaking into Aparna’s house — the deadly assassin who hunted her all season — and holding her at gunpoint, asking simply to talk. A surprising move that hints at a new, unexpected alliance. The Review Geek

What Does This Mean for Season 3?

The finale left several key threads open: the Manticore network suffered major damage but parts of it remain intact. Nadia received a new identity but her safety is far from guaranteed. And Mason’s discovery that Bernard had ordered the drone strike that killed his father adds a deeper layer of moral corruption to the series’ core relationships. Koimoi

Before the finale, Nadia gives Bernard a device containing names of other Citadel survivors — a setup that directly bridges the main series to its various global spin-offs, hinting at a much larger, interconnected world ahead. Sportskeeda
