Chelsea Winger Mykhaylo Mudryk Handed Four-Year Ban by FA, Appeals to CAS

In one of the most significant anti-doping cases in Premier League history, the Football Association has handed Chelsea winger Mykhaylo Mudryk the maximum four-year ban for a breach of anti-doping regulations. Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has officially lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after being hit with a maximum four-year ban for a doping violation. The case has sent shockwaves across English football, raising difficult questions about intent, contamination, and the future of one of the sport’s most expensive signings.

The Failed Drugs Test

The suspension stems from a routine urine sample collected in late 2024 which tested positive for meldonium, a prohibited metabolic modulator. Meldonium was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list in 2016 because it can enhance blood flow and exercise capacity. Mudryk believes his sample was contaminated when he was on international duty with Ukraine in October 2024. 

According to the FA’s official findings, he breached Regulations 3 and 4 of their Anti-Doping Regulations regarding the presence and use of a prohibited substance. The 25-year-old was initially sidelined in December 2024 after an “adverse finding in a routine urine test” led to a provisional suspension, and he was officially charged in June 2025.

The FA’s Maximum Punishment

The Football Association has handed Mudryk a four-year suspension, the maximum penalty available, following a long-running investigation into a failed drugs test. Under FA regulations, doping offenses are treated as strict liability violations, meaning the presence of a substance in a player’s system constitutes an offense regardless of intent.

Mudryk’s Denial

From the outset, Mudryk has vehemently maintained his innocence, stating the failed routine urine test came as a “complete shock” and insisting he had “never knowingly used any banned substances.”

The CAS Appeal

Mudryk’s legal representatives at Morgan Sports Law took up a fight, filing a formal appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on February 25, 2026, with both parties currently exchanging written submissions ahead of a hearing date. CAS confirmed: “Cas confirms it has received an appeal by Mykhailo Mudryk against the FA, filed on 25 February 2026,” with legal teams currently in the process of exchanging documentation. Mudryk has retained Morgan Sports Law, the firm that successfully represented Paul Pogba in reducing a similar four-year doping ban to 18 months in 2024.

Could the Ban Be Reduced?

If Mudryk can prove a lack of malice behind his failed test, he will likely see his own ban reduced. Any suspension is expected to include the 16 months he has already spent on the sidelines, meaning any reduction towards the 18-month mark would almost certainly free him up for an immediate return to action. Sources close to the player remain optimistic that the appeal could see his ban significantly reduced, potentially allowing him to return to the pitch as early as next season.

Chelsea’s Difficult Position

The club previously reassigned Mudryk’s number 10 shirt to Cole Palmer in June 2025 and is reportedly considering the future of the player’s contract, which runs through 2030. The Blues have bolstered on the wing during Mudryk’s absence, recruiting Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens last summer as a clear sign of their planning for a life without a player who, even before he was banned, offered precious little on the pitch. In 73 appearances across all competitions, Mudryk has managed 10 goals and 11 assists for Chelsea, falling well short of the standard expected of a player with his lofty price tag.

The CEO of Shakhtar Donetsk, Mudryk’s former club, stated: “We have €30 million of bonuses in his contract. And if he is not playing, if Chelsea are not reaching results, we are losing €30m. That’s a big financial impact for us.”

Mudryk wants to return to football this year and is keeping fit by training at non-league Uxbridge FC with a private coach, having hired goalkeepers to work with. It emerged in early April that Chelsea had registered an “updated contract” for the 25-year-old, the specifics of which have not been revealed. If the current four-year ban remains in place, the player would not be eligible to return to professional competition until December 2028.
