Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Spanish left-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano for a fixed fee of €19m (£16.3m) plus €2m in add-ons, bringing to an end a transfer saga that has dominated the Blues’ summer business.

The deal is done for the Spanish left-back, with Chavarria set to fly for his medical and contract signing, with club-to-club signatures expected imminently.

Why Chelsea Needed Chavarria

Negotiations between the two clubs had been ongoing for more than a month, with Chelsea identifying Chavarria as the replacement for Marc Cucurella following his move to Real Madrid.

Jorrel Hato was their only recognised senior left-back, although academy prospect Landon Emenalo had featured in the position during pre-season. That left Xabi Alonso’s squad dangerously thin on the left side of defence, making Chavarria’s arrival a matter of necessity rather than luxury.

Chelsea identified Chavarria as their preferred target early in the transfer window. The Blues believe his experience and consistency would strengthen the squad immediately. While other candidates were considered during negotiations, the Spanish defender remained the club’s first choice throughout the process.

Who Is Pep Chavarria?

Full name Josep María Chavarría Pérez, the left-back was born on 10 April 1998 in Figueres, Spain, and stands 1.74m tall.

Despite being 28 years old, Chavarría has only accumulated four seasons of experience in the top flight of Spanish football. The defender joined Rayo Vallecano from Real Zaragoza in 2022 and has since established himself as a regular figure in the Madrid-based team.

Since joining Vallecano from Real Zaragoza in 2022, he has made 125 appearances and established himself as one of the best left-backs in the league.

The full-back featured in 44 games in all competitions for Rayo Vallecano last season. Chavarria started for Rayo Vallecano in last season’s Conference League final, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Chavarria ranked among the top dozen players in the competition for crosses from open play and corners won. He was also among the top dozen players for blocking crosses and winning possession in the defensive third.

What Does He Bring to Chelsea?

He is a good progressive ball carrier, a skill-set that makes him vital to manager Xabi Alonso’s system. Alonso has instructed his full-backs to get the ball up-field by carrying it when they can during pre-season.

Chavarria is equipped for this, with his top speed at Rayo Vallecano reaching 36.3 km/h — enabling him to quickly catch up to wingers in transition or make up enough ground to force them to act.

He is also an accurate crosser and is able to pick out crosses and cut-backs when needed.

It is perhaps telling that Andoni Iraola was in charge at Rayo when Chavarria was brought to the club in 2022 — a coach who values players who can bring real intensity to a team’s performance. Iraola loves his full-backs to overlap, and Chavarria can do that.

Chelsea’s Bigger Summer Picture

Chavarria will be Chelsea’s ninth addition this summer. They have brought in Marco Palestra, Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson, and Danny Welbeck, while deals were previously agreed for Emanuel Emegha, Geovany Quenda, and Valentin Barco.

His signing continues the trend of Chelsea seeking out more experienced acquisitions under new manager Xabi Alonso, following the arrivals of 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton and 36-year-old Jordan Henderson.

Rayo Vallecano will receive a club-record fee from a sale for a player who joined them from Real Zaragoza four years ago — a fitting reward for a club that helped transform Chavarria into a LaLiga regular.
