Ever since joining Chelsea after his contract at PSG expired, Thiago Silva has helped to completely transform Chelsea’s defense. Frank Lampard had a difficult first season in charge of his former playing club, and the Englishman struggled to build cohesion at the backline.Â
The Brazilian is pivotal to Lampard’s new look centre-back partnership and has really settled in with Kurt Zouma alongside him. Chelsea originally recruited the 36-year-old on a one year deal. However, there was an option for the club to extend the deal by a year.
As per numerous reports coming out of the British capital, Chelsea are reportedly interested in extending Silva’s contract till 2022.
The saying that age is just a number is perfectly brought to life by the veteran defender. Despite him being well past his prime, he has adapted well to the English style of football, often deemed the most difficult league in the world.
Chelsea’s defensive numbers speak for themselves. They have conceded only one goal in the Champions League, and have the best defensive record of all the participating teams. Despite being three games into the competition, they had conceded no goals alongside fellow English club Liverpool.
In the Premier League, they have conceded 10 goals and have the joint-highest goal difference in the league alongside London rivals Spurs.
The player himself has expressed his happiness when it comes to playing for Chelsea multiple times. His physical prowess might not be at its best, but he can still perform on the pitch and offer stability to the Chelsea time.
Having the likes of Mendy and Zouma alongside him, communication is not a problem due to all three players knowing French. This has helped Chelsea immensely improve on their backline and extending Silva’s contract will be a great move by the club to secure the next season as well.
