Chelsea have purchased land beside Stamford Bridge from the Sir Oswald Stoll Mansions, with an official confirmation now being made by Stoll. They have spent a sum worth £80 million for the 1.2 acres surrounding their stadium in hopes of expanding the ground.
The club will take possession of the land from 2025, allowing veterans in the area ample time to relocate and receive compensation for their homes in the area.
Chelsea confirm Stoll land purchase surrounding Stamford Bridge
“Today we have announced that we have agreed to sell the majority of our Fulham site to the Chelsea FC ownership group following a 9-week resident consultation. This will enable us to establish new properties, better services for veterans & secure Stoll’s financial sustainability,” an official statement from Stoll read.
Chelsea’s new COO, Jason Gannon, is reportedly keen on the idea of moving away from Stamford Bridge. The rumours of moving away from the historic ground have not gone down well with supporters, who are eager to remain at the Bridge.
In recent years, the identity of the club has been thrown into question owing to the mass sale and incoming of players. And a departure from Stamford Bridge could further alienate the supporters, who are already feeling less connected to their club.
A final decision has not been made by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali over their plans with the newly acquired land. However, there are several signs indicating that the club could build a new stadium with a bigger capacity than their current home.
