ChatGPT Just Got Smarter — And Free Users Finally Get Unlimited Chats

Good news if you’ve ever hit that annoying “you’ve reached your limit” wall on ChatGPT — OpenAI just rolled out a major update, and it’s a win for everyone, paid or free.

Here’s the breakdown of what’s actually changing and why it matters for how you use ChatGPT daily.

What’s New in This Update?

OpenAI has refreshed GPT-5.6 Sol for Plus and Pro users, focusing on tighter, more accurate answers instead of generic filler. There’s also a new slider letting you control how much “thinking effort” the model puts into each response — quick for simple questions, deeper for research or planning.

Meanwhile, Free users are getting a serious upgrade too: unlimited text chats powered by GPT-5.6 Luna, plus a new “Think” button for trickier questions that need extra reasoning.

ChatGPT: Overview

Why This Matters?

The standout upgrade here is accuracy. In internal testing on financial, medical, and legal prompts, responses containing at least one factual error were about 62% less common with GPT‑5.6 Luna and 68% less common with GPT‑5.6 Sol than with GPT‑5.5 Instant. That’s a meaningful jump for anyone using ChatGPT for research, work, or decision-making. openai

OpenAI is also blending the “quick chat” and “deep thinking” experiences into one consistent model, so switching between modes doesn’t feel like talking to a different AI. As part of the broader AI landscape, OpenAI continues to compete directly with other large language model developers — a space that’s evolved rapidly since its founding, as detailed on Wikipedia.

For free users especially, removing chat limits is a big deal — it means using ChatGPT for ongoing projects, brainstorming, or long conversations without hitting a wall mid-thought.
