Champions League Team of the Week: Matchday 2

Matchday 2 of the 21/22 Champions League group stage is in the history books, with some very surprising results being delivered. Here is the team of the week as released by the Champions League themselves.

GK: Giorgos Athanasiadis – Sheriff Tiraspol

In Sheriff’s second ever Champions League game, Athanasiadis helped the newcomers win against 13-time Champions Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Greek keeper was only beaten by Karim Benzema via penalty, and did excellently to keep his team in the game.

CB: Milan Skriniar – Inter Milan

Skirniar helped Inter Milan gain their first point in the Champions League this season as they drew against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk 0-0.

CB: Douglas Santos – Zenit St Petersburg

Douglas Santos featured for Zenit in the left wing back role, but has been included as a part of the defense due to his contribution in the game against Malmo. He assisted the first goal from Paulinho to open the scoring.

CB: Yaroslav Rakitskiy – Zenit St Petersburg

Not only did Rakitskiy keep a clean sheet for Zenit as they won their game against Malmo, but he also assisted two of the four goals scored as a defender to rack up an outstanding performance in the Champions League.

CM: Hans Vanaken – Club Brugge

The Belgian club continued their surprising run of form in the Champions League, this time taking all three points off of Leipzig. Vanaken scored the equaliser for the visitors and played a big role in their victory against the German club.

CM: Idrissa Gueye – PSG

PSG won a high-profile game against Manchester City at the Parc de Princes, and Idrissa Gueye scored the first goal of the game to put the hosts ahead. The midfielder had an outstanding showing on the pitch and makes it to the team of the season for his performances.

CAM: Federico Chiesa – Juventus

Chiesa was the star player for Juventus as they managed to win 1-0 against defending champions Chelsea. The Italian scored the only goal of the game 11 seconds after the second half began, and was the difference maker for the hosts.

RW: Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Salah scored a brace against Porto as Liverpool thrashed the Portuguese club 5-1 at their own ground. The Egyptian winger continues his stellar form in European competition along with the Premier League.

LW: Leroy Sane – Bayern Munich

Sane managed to get a goal and an assist in Bayern’s 5-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League. The German winger was influential in the win, and played 79 minutes before being subbed off for Buona Sarr.

ST: Karim Adeyemi – RB Salzburg

Adeyemi converted two penalties in the game against Ligue 1 champions Lille to win the game by a 2-1 scoreline. The youngster has been chosen over Robert Lewandowski, who also scored a brace against Kyiv.

ST: Darwin Nunez – Benfica

Nunez scored a brace against Barcelona in what was the most surprising win on the second night of fixtures. The 22-year-old opened the scoring three minutes into the game, and later converted a penalty to kill the game off and secure a big victory for Benfica.
