Despite his slight build, Reis stands out for his aerial ability, excelling in both defensive and attacking situations. In the Brazilian Serie A last season, he won 2.9 aerial duels per 90 minutes, a statistic that would rank him in the Premier League’s top 10 this campaign. For perspective, Liverpool’s towering centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté have each won 3.0 aerial duels per 90, and Manchester City’s most dominant defender in this metric, Nathan Aké, has won 2.1.

While Palmeiras typically have less possession (53.7%) compared to a ball-dominant team like Manchester City (61.5%), this means their defenders often have more chances to contest aerial duels. Nevertheless, Reis’ aerial win rate of 66.2% is better than any Manchester City defender, with Rúben Dias leading City at 60%.

His ability to challenge in the air also translates well in the opposition’s box, as both of his goals for Palmeiras have come from headers. Given Guardiola’s tendency to utilize his centre-backs across the back four, it’s no surprise that City have targeted Reis as a player they can develop into a physical presence.

Reis’ journey could follow a similar trajectory to Gabriel Jesus, who was also signed by City from Palmeiras in 2017. While Jesus wasn’t always a regular starter, he still played an important role in City’s success, contributing to four Premier League titles, three League Cups, and an FA Cup.
