Samsung is all set to overtake Xiaomi to be the biggest Smartphone brand in India

Market analysts believe that Samsung will overtake Xiaomi to become India’s leading smartphone brand by volume in the coming year, owing to the Korean conglomerate’s growing online sales and financing plans, as well as its Chinese rival’s ongoing regulatory troubles.

Market analysts also estimate that exports in 2023 will be pulled down by macroeconomic challenges that will endure at least through the first half of 2023, resulting in a second consecutive year of contraction, or at most low single-digit growth. Except for the first Covid-hit year of 2020, smartphone shipments in 2022 are projected to dip year on year for the first time.

The expansion of 5G networks will also drive people to purchase more expensive gadgets, pushing average selling costs of smartphones above $250, according to analysts. “Samsung might capture 23-24% market share by the second quarter of 2023, overtaking Xiaomi, who will continue to own 19-20% share of the market,” said Faisal Kawoosa, chief analyst at Techarc.

    Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4

He added that Samsung’s financing schemes have been accepted well by the retailers, which has helped it to push more premium devices to consumers. “They are also offering a good spread of devices, catering to different segments. Now that markets are not as polarised in terms of opportunity, with both the budget and premium segments offering good business, Samsung has a good chance in beating Xiaomi to the top.”

Experts predict that as the market moves up the price ladder, with average selling prices approaching Rs 20,000, China’s Xiaomi would face consumer resistance. The majority of the company’s revenue has come from the mass volume entry-level market, which is today failing to generate the same volume and revenue as before. This, paired with the company’s heavy scrutiny from government officials, may cause Xiaomi to struggle to increase market share.

“Xiaomi’s acceptability beyond Rs 20,000 is much less. Plus, the issues Xiaomi is going through will play out in the minds of retailers stocking the company’s devices, if not the end users,” Kawoosa said.

According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung is already the industry leader in terms of revenue share.

During the third quarter ended September 2022, the company increased by double digits, outpacing the general market growth in revenues. According to the research organisation, the Korean brand was the only one increasing among the top five over the critical holiday season.

According to IDC India, overall shipments in 2023 are projected to return to levels seen in 2019, totaling around 140 million units, compared to an expected 150 million units in 2022. However, the Rajasthan government has placed a big order of 13 million smartphones for women heads of low-income families.

“We believe the macroeconomic conditions will start easing by the second half of year, which will act as a fillip to sales in the sub-Rs 10,000 segment. People who have held back on purchasing smartphones this year will also go for an upgrade in 2023, which is another factor,” said Prachir Singh, senior analyst, Counterpoint Research.

With the Rajasthan government tender included, Counterpoint Research predicts that the market will expand by 10% year on year. However, it said that the open market will have 4% growth, with macroeconomic conditions projected to ease by the second half of 2023. The market researcher anticipates 163 million unit shipments in 2022.

  • SpaceX launches Starshield, its new government-focused satellite internet service

SpaceX launches Starshield, its new government-focused satellite internet service

SpaceX has discreetly introduced a new government-focused service called Starshield on its website, which it claims provides a “secured satellite network for government entities.” The document, which emerged earlier this week on the SpaceX website, states that while its satellite internet service Starlink is intended at end consumers and businesses, “Starshield is designed for government use.”

The Starshield announcement builds on previous collaborations between SpaceX and governments throughout the world. SpaceX secured a $2 million deal with the US Air Force in August to offer satellite internet connectivity, while Starlink has also proven critical to Ukrainian soldiers fighting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to Bloomberg, the Pentagon recently announced that it was testing Starlink broadband in the Arctic as a potential option to provide internet to US troops.

Starshield is advertised with three areas of focus: earth observation, communications, and “hosted payloads,” which CNBC notes would effectively allow governments to customize what its spacecraft can send into space. SpaceX says that Starlink already offers “end-to-end user data encryption” but that Starshield has additional security that can meet “the most demanding government requirements.” However, the exact capabilities and scope of the network were not detailed.

Another touted feature is the use of a “inter-satellite laser communications terminal” which would allow SpaceX’s gear to interface with partner satellites and operate as part of the same network.

Although Starlink was initially marketed as a solution for rural users to access faster internet, newer announcements have focused on larger-scale deployments such as satellite internet for commercial jets. This kind of scale is probably going to be required if SpaceX is to meet its previously stated target of producing more than $30 billion from satellite internet connectivity by 2025.

  • Twitter: Blue Subscription to cost $11 per month on iPhones

Twitter: Blue Subscription to cost $11 per month on iPhones

According to The Information, Twitter plans to charge $11 per month for a Twitter Blue subscription on the iPhone in order to account for Apple’s 30% cut on in-app purchases. Twitter Blue will cost $7 per month on the web.

Twitter Blue was charging $7.99 for a subscription before it was suspended, but the price will change before it relaunches. Some staff have been briefed about the new pricing, according to The Information, but Twitter CEO Elon Musk is renowned for making fast decisions, so it is unclear if plans will change.

Because the iPhone is more expensive, Twitter will be able to pay Apple’s 30 percent portion of in-app purchase proceeds without materially impacting Twitter’s bottom line. Because of the price disparity, most customers will most likely subscribe via the web, allowing Twitter to avoid in-app purchase expenses.

Other companies, such as Spotify, have previously charged greater costs on the iPhone than on the web, but this frequently causes consumer confusion because they do not understand why the prices range from device to device. Apple has no problem with companies charging more for subscriptions in apps than they do on the web.

Musk blasted Apple’s App Store fees last week, claiming that Apple had “threatened to withhold Twitter from its ‌App Store‌,” but he then backtracked after meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Musk and Cook met at Apple Park, and Musk later stated that they had a “nice talk” and that there had been a “misunderstanding” about Twitter possibly being removed from the App Store.

Twitter Blue is set to be relaunched on Friday. Subscriptions to Twitter Blue were suspended after Musk included a verification checkmark with Twitter Blue, allowing anyone with $8 to spend to mimic companies, celebrities, and other high-profile individuals. Since November 11, Twitter Blue has been unavailable.

Twitter Blue will be relaunched with various badge colours for corporations, government accounts, and individuals, as well as restrictions on altering usernames and signup limits for newer users.

  • Cybersecurity: Data of about 6 lakh Indians is reportedly being sold online for Rs 490 each

Cybersecurity: Data of about 6 lakh Indians is reportedly being sold online for Rs 490 each

As data-harvesting malware or bots proliferate, the data of at least 6 lakh Indians has been stolen and sold on bot markets, with the average price for one Indian’s digital identity being around Rs 490, according to cyber-security researchers on Thursday.

According to research by cybersecurity company NordVPN, India was the most affected country in the world, accounting for 13% of all data on bot markets. Bot markets are internet marketplaces where hackers sell data stolen from their victims’ devices via bot malware.

The data is sold in packets that include logins, cookies, digital fingerprints, screenshots, and other information – a compromised person’s entire digital identity. Hackers are selling camera pictures, screenshots, up-to-date logins, cookies, and digital fingerprints, and this expanding menace has already harmed five million people worldwide.

“At least five million people have had their online identities stolen and sold on bot markets for Rs 490 on average. Out of all the affected people, 600,000 are from India, making the country the most affected by this threat in the world,” said the researchers.

On the markets examined, at least 26.6 million stolen login data were discovered. 720,000 Google logins, 654,000 Microsoft logins, and 647,000 Facebook logins were among them.

Researchers also discovered 667 million cookies, 81 thousand digital fingerprints, 538 thousand auto-fill forms, as well as various gadget screenshots and webcam snaps.

“Digital bots are becoming increasingly common. They operate in fields such as customer service, search engine optimisation and entertainment. Yet not all bots may serve good intentions — many of them can be malicious,” said security researchers. RedLine, Vidar, Racoon, Taurus, and AZORult are the most common types of malware that steal and gather data. “The 2easy marketplace was launched in 2018. At first, it was considered to be smaller compared to other markets. Yet the situation has dramatically changed since then. Now, 2easy sells more than 600,000 stolen data logs from 269 countries,” said the report.

  • Nvidia might have just revived its “Cancelled” RTX 4080 12GB as its new RTX 4070 Ti

Nvidia might have just revived its “Cancelled” RTX 4080 12GB as its new RTX 4070 Ti

The rumored-to-be-imminent Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti, the third Lovelace product, has seen a spec leak – and the obvious lesson is that it’s similar to the cancelled RTX 4080 12GB. The alleged specifications were highlighted by VideoCardz and come directly from a card maker, Colorful, which featured the RTX 4070 Ti BattleAx Deluxe on its website. Although the product page has since been removed, it had most of the BattleAx card’s specifications as well as photographs.

The graphics card is black with red trim but otherwise appears quite plain, and it uses the same cooler as the RTX 4080 16GB – which is telling in terms of the similarities to the cancelled 12GB 4080.

Furthermore, as previously stated, the specifications offered are same. The Colorful RTX 4070 Ti contains 12GB of GDDR6X VRAM and a 192-bit memory interface and works at the same clock speed as the ‘unlaunched’ 4080 12GB (2310MHz base clock). TDP is specified as 285W, which is identical to the cancelled lower-tier 4080.

While this leak appears to be rather reliable, coming from an actual card manufacturer and packed with a slew of photos of the RTX 4070 Ti BattleAx Deluxe, we should be cautious about the specifications offered. There’s a chance that whoever created the product page made a mistake – after all, the page’s appearance appears to have been an accident – or perhaps several mistakes (across multiple spec points), but that doesn’t seem very likely.

    Nvidia
    credit: tomshardware

Taking this leak at face value, it tells us that Nvidia appears to be relaunching the RTX 4080 12GB as the RTX 4070 Ti, and while we knew this was coming, we expected some minor changes to separate the versions. It looks that this is a literal relaunch of the exact same card.

However, one critical component of the specification is missing: the CUDA Core count. The AD104 was achieved as the full-fat version with all 7,680 cores in the 4080 12GB, so we don’t know if the RTX 4070 Ti will be the same.

There is still a chance that Nvidia will differentiate the 4070 Ti by reducing the number of CUDA Cores marginally. The way, Team Green can claim, “Look, this card is different from that cancelled 4080,” and Nvidia can justify lowering the price from the $899 that the lower-tier 4080 was marketed at.

  • TSMC Arizona plant is expected to make around $10 billion in revenue every year

TSMC Arizona plant is expected to make around $10 billion in revenue every year

Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC announced on Tuesday that it would more than treble its planned investment in its new Arizona plant to $40 billion, making it one of the largest foreign investments in US history, as President Joe Biden visited and lauded the project. The increased investment is a significant victory for Biden, who faced supply chain disruptions early in his presidency.

Biden’s recent trip to Asia convinced him that the United States is better positioned to lead the global economy in the next years “provided we keep our focus,” he said. When the two planned chip manufacturing sites open, Mark Liu, chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, or TSMC, estimates yearly revenue of $10 billion, with customers having annual sales of $40 billion from goods employing chips created there.

Apple Inc, Nvidia Corp, and Advanced Micro Devices Inc, all significant TSMC clients, have stated that their chips will be manufactured in the new facilities.

TSMC founder Morris Chang, chipmaker Micron Technology Inc CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang were among those who joined Biden at the facility’s opening ceremony. The factory, which is set to open in 2024, will produce a more advanced semiconductor than was previously announced.

Following the announcement, TSMC’s Taipei-listed shares were flat in early trade on Wednesday, matching the broader market. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, is a major supplier to major hardware manufacturers in the United States. Its $40 billion investment in the two projects is the company’s largest outside of Taiwan.

    TSMC
    credit: reuters

The expansion of TSMC’s commitment in Arizona is the latest in a series of big investments made by chipmakers since the CHIPS and Science Act was passed this summer. International Business Machines Corp, Micron Technology Inc, and Wolfspeed Inc are among them.

TSMC announced plans to establish a second factory nearby to make “3 nanometer” chips, the most sophisticated currently in production, by 2026.

TSMC also stated that it intends to construct an industrial water reclamation plant. Chip production requires a lot of water, and Arizona, which is mostly desert, is experiencing water problems.

According to Liu, TSMC’s Phoenix plants are planned to produce 13,000 high-tech jobs, 4,500 of which will be employed by TSMC and the balance by suppliers. Biden has pushed to increase semiconductor output after the epidemic produced supply chain issues that resulted in chip shortages for autos and many other things.

According to a White House report on supply chain issues released last year, the United States accounts for only 12% of worldwide semiconductor production, down from 37% two decades ago.

Taiwan’s leading position as a manufacturer of chips used in technologies ranging from cellphones to automobiles to fighter jets has raised concerns about the island’s over-reliance, particularly as China increases military pressure to establish its sovereignty claims.

    TSMC

China claims Taiwan as its territory, while Taipei’s democratically elected government rejects Beijing’s claims of sovereignty. The $52.7 billion Chips and Science Act, which Biden signed into law in August, is intended to prevent a return of supply chain issues.

Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election in Arizona helped propel him to the White House. In 2016, Republican Donald Trump won the state. Biden has stated that he plans to run for re-election in 2024.

  • Baldurs Gate 3 confirms its official Release Date

Baldurs Gate 3 confirms its official Release Date

Baldurs Gate 3 debuted a new teaser at The Game Awards, including the return of fan-favorite ranger Minsc and confirming the game’s release date. Baldurs Gate 3 is more than just the director’s successor to BioWare’s legendary Baldurs Gate games. It was developed by Larian Studios following the phenomenal success of Divinity: Original Sin 2. Baldurs Gate 3 is the biggest project Larian Studios has ever attempted, attempting to transform the Fifth Edition of Dungeons and Dragons into a seamless computer gaming experience without losing its tabletop charm.

Following in the footsteps of Divinity: Original Sin 2, Larian Studios has provided gamers with a hands-on experience for those who have preordered the game through Baldurs Gate 3’s Early Access. This version had around half of the total companions from the entire game, as well as half of Act 1, giving players a taste of the Fifth Edition gameplay and branching plot pathways that Baldur’s Gate 3 promised. If first impressions are any indication, Larian Studios is on course to achieve the lofty expectations that lie ahead.

Baldurs Gate fans won’t have to wait long for the entire game, as Larian Studios has announced that Baldurs Gate 3 will be released in August 2023.

The news was followed by a story trailer showcasing the game’s stunning graphics, as well as confirmation of the return of a fan-favorite character in Baldurs Gate 3. Minsc slithering out of a mimic with brutal force is just the kind of entrance this famous ranger need, as he will be the only Baldurs Gate companion to appear in all three games. The breathtaking restoration of Baldurs Gate’s city initially glimpsed in December 1998 and now elegantly converted into a vibrant metropolis, is overshadowed by his homecoming. The teaser includes shots of the city’s icons, like Ramazith’s Tower, the Ducal Palace, and even Sorcerous Sundries.

Baldurs Gate 3 Early Access just included Bard as a class, as well as the ability to create a Gnome. It remains to be seen whether it will receive another upgrade before the game’s August release. Baldur’s Gate fans who can’t wait that long and need a hands-on preview will undoubtedly appreciate at least one gameplay of Baldurs Gate 3, even in its currently truncated state. Despite Larian Studios’ terrible tendency of rushing the last chapters of its games, the prevailing judgment appears to be that Baldur’s Gate’s magnificent legacy is in excellent hands.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is releasing in August 2023 on PC.

  • Nothing is expected to reach a whopping $250 million in revenue for 2022

Nothing is expected to reach a whopping $250 million in revenue for 2022

According to CNBC, Carl Pei, the former OnePlus co-founder, expects his consumer electronics firm Nothing’s revenue to more than double – from $20 million in 2021 to about $250 million in 2022.

According to the study, Nothing, which began in October 2020, has more than increased its personnel number to over 400. However, the corporation is losing money as a result of foreign currency conversion.

“We are not profitable right now. And this year was made even harder due to the foreign currency exchange. We pay a lot of our COGS [cost of goods sold] in USD but we make money in pounds, in euros, in Indian rupees — so everything devalued against the USD,’ Pei was quoted as saying in the report.

Nothing is also aiming to introduce a smartphone in the United States to compete with Apple and Samsung, according to the source.

Pei told the television station that talks are underway with US telecom providers about the upcoming Nothing smartphone, but provided no other details. Nothing introduced its first smartphone, the mid-range Phone (1), in select markets, including India, in July.

“Every startup manufacturer has worked with Foxconn,” Pei was quoted as saying. “But when it was our turn, they said no because every startup that worked with them failed. And every time a startup failed, Foxconn lost money on it, they were not able to recoup their costs.”

According to the report, Nothing asked Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn to produce its phones. Foxconn, on the other hand, refused to do business with the company, citing “previous failures in the smartphone industry.”

Twitter: Elon Musk told employees to work exclusively from the company’s San Francisco Headquarters

Elon Musk demanded that employees begin reporting to the Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco in an email addressed to employees on Wednesday, telling them that other Bay Area locations will not be used “for now.”

This isn’t the first time Musk has invited Twitter staff to visit the company’s headquarters. Nonetheless, this current communication represents an increase in his efforts to eliminate remote labour.

Musk’s decision is also a stark departure from the ethos set by his predecessor, Jack Dorsey, who stated in 2020 that Twitter staff will be permitted to work from home “forever.”

Musk repeated his conviction that corporate camaraderie is best developed in the office in an email to colleagues in early November with the subject line “Being There,” a reference to a 1979 satirical film. He thanked those who were already staying late at work at the time. He also mentioned that staff who were “performing at an exceptional level” could continue to work remotely.

Musk’s latest email isn’t the first time he’s directly asked Twitter’s designers and software developers to join him on the 10th floor, where he works routinely.

Musk addressed a similar request to his team in late November, adding that the 10th floor is “intended to be dense and intense.” Many of the Twitter’s engineers have already set up shop on the 10th level. Musk has also been known to conduct regular walk-throughs during which he observes personnel and occasionally questions them about the projects they are working on.
