Mikel Arteta’s Assistant Carlos Cuesta Set to Become New Parma Manager

Parma Calcio 1913 are poised to make one of the boldest managerial appointments in recent Italian football, as Sky Sport Italia reports that Carlos Cuesta is now the frontrunner to take charge at the club. The 29-year-old Spaniard, currently part of Mikel Arteta’s coaching staff at Arsenal, is expected to be handed his first major role as a head coach by the Ducali hierarchy. The move signals Parma’s intention to embrace a fresh, modern approach as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season in Serie A.

The appointment, yet to be made official, represents a significant step both for Parma and for Cuesta, who turns 30 next month. With respected journalists Gianluca Di Marzio and Fabrizio Romano also confirming the reports, the club appears ready to hand their bench to one of Europe’s rising tactical minds.

A Calculated Gamble by Parma’s Leadership

Opting for Cuesta is a bold but calculated move by the Parma board. While the young Spaniard has never managed a senior side, his reputation in coaching circles has grown rapidly thanks to his analytical acumen and tactical insight. Having worked alongside Arteta at Arsenal since 2020, Cuesta has been instrumental in helping the Premier League outfit develop one of the most distinctive playing styles in Europe.

It’s an unconventional route for the Ducali, who were recently linked with experienced figures like Mark van Bommel, currently available after his spell at Royal Antwerp. Parma also considered Daniele De Rossi, but the Italian opted to continue his career elsewhere, leaving the door open for Cuesta’s unexpected rise.

Familiar With Italian Football Foundations

Despite his youth, Cuesta is not entirely unfamiliar with the Italian game. Between 2018 and 2020, he served as assistant coach for Juventus’ Under-17 squad, working under Francesco Pedone. That spell allowed him to gain valuable experience within Italy’s tactical football environment, laying a foundation that could serve him well at Parma.

Before his stint in Italy, Cuesta honed his skills at Atlético Madrid between 2014 and 2018, another club famous for tactical rigor. These formative years across Spain and Italy have molded him into one of the most respected young minds in modern football coaching, even before stepping into a first-team managerial role.

Ties to Arsenal and Final Steps Before Official Confirmation

Although Cuesta has not been the primary assistant to Arteta, his influence at Arsenal has been significant. His role has involved close collaboration with Arteta’s tactical setups and player development strategies, contributing to Arsenal’s resurgence as Premier League contenders.

However, before Parma can formally present him as their new coach, there remains the matter of terminating his contract with Arsenal. Negotiations are expected to progress swiftly, given that both clubs and the coach are seemingly eager to move forward.

Replacing Cristian Chivu: The Bigger Picture

Parma’s coaching vacancy arose after Cristian Chivu decided to leave for Inter, prompting the club to explore ambitious avenues for their next leader. In targeting Cuesta, Parma appears to be following a growing European trend of betting on young, progressive tacticians rather than established veterans.

The move aligns with the club’s long-term vision of developing a sustainable footballing philosophy centered around youth, modern tactics, and forward-thinking leadership.
