India educates more students than almost anywhere on Earth, and that scale is exactly why getting AI in classrooms right matters so much. A new report from Wadhwani AI, in partnership with The Bridgespan Group and support from Google.org, lays out a roadmap for how artificial intelligence can be woven into India’s public education system without leaving anyone behind.

AI Scale We’re Talking About

DetailNumbers
Students in India250 million+
Schools1.5 million
Learners in government/govt-aided schools~60%
Potential GDP contribution by 2047$2.6 trillion
Potential GDP growth boostUp to 1 percentage point annually
Learners potentially impacted by “Bold Bets”Up to 350 million

Why Now?

India’s education push has strong momentum behind it already — NEP 2020 policy direction combined with digital infrastructure like DIKSHA and NDEAR has built a solid foundation. The report argues AI is the next natural layer on top, helping expand equal opportunity, accelerate learning through adaptive tools, and connect education more directly to employment outcomes.

Shekar Sivasubramanian, Head of Wadhwani AI, made a key point: technology alone won’t transform education. It has to work alongside strong systems, trained teachers, reliable data, and proper safeguards to actually stick.

AI

What’s Already Working

This isn’t just theoretical — early AI deployments are already showing results. AI-enabled Oral Reading Fluency assessments have supported over 27 million assessments across 8.5 million students, while adaptive learning platforms have shown 2–3x improvements in learning outcomes during controlled evaluations. Tools like Pratham’s PadhAI platform are speeding up multilingual literacy checks in low-resource classrooms, and career-guidance solutions from Antarang are helping students navigate the tricky path from education to employment.

The Seven “Bold Bets”

The report identifies seven priority areas for long-term change: personalized learning, AI-powered teacher support, multilingual access, early childhood education, career navigation, skill development, and socio-emotional learning. Together, these areas — if scaled through public systems — could touch hundreds of millions of learners.

This vision closely echoes India’s broader development goals, aligning with the country’s push toward becoming a developed nation, often referred to under the Viksit Bharat initiative aimed at 2047.

Marija Ralic of Google.org emphasized that continuous access to quality education is foundational to the future, while Bridgespan’s Anant Bhagwati stressed the importance of long-term investment that’s built for real system conditions rather than short-term pilots.
