Byun Yo Han Transforms Into A Chilling Villain In “The Journey To Gyeongju”

Freedom lasts about five minutes in “The Journey to Gyeongju.” New stills reveal Byun Yo Han stepping into one of his most unsettling roles yet — a man abducted the moment he walks out of prison.

What’s The Film About?

“The Journey to Gyeongju” is a family revenge thriller centered on a mother and her three daughters who set off on a “killer” journey after waiting eight long years for justice. Their youngest daughter, Gyeong Ju, never returned from a school field trip, and this film follows what happens when the family finally gets its chance at revenge.

Byun Yo Han plays Baek Sang Hyun, the man responsible for taking Gyeong Ju from her mother, Ok Sil, played by Lee Jung Eun. After serving eight years behind bars, Baek Sang Hyun is abducted by Ok Sil and her daughters while unconscious under anesthesia — never even getting a taste of freedom.

A Total Physical Transformation

To bring the character to life, Byun Yo Han embraced messy hair, a bushy beard, rough skin, and even wore a custom mouthpiece to discolor his teeth. He also studied unsettling walking patterns and anxious eye movements to nail the character’s chilling, on-edge presence.

Why Byun Yo Han Took The Role — For Free

In a striking move, Byun Yo Han joined the project without any fee. He explained that the producing director of his first commercial film, “Will You Be There?”, was behind this project, and the strong screenplay drew him in immediately. Working alongside actors like Lee Jung Eun also made the experience meaningful for him.

He noted that since the character has no justification or sympathetic motive, he was able to commit fully to the role, believing his own discomfort while acting would translate into genuine tension for the audience.

Director Kim Mi Jo said casting Byun Yo Han felt like fate the moment his name came up, praising his ability to uncover hidden layers in the script she hadn’t even considered.

Lee Jung Eun, known for her acclaimed supporting roles across Korean film and television, brings decades of experience to this emotionally charged story.
