Ben White’s Return Is Helping Bring the Best Out of Bukayo Saka

Bukayo Saka has been eased back into Arsenal’s starting XI carefully since returning from injury at the end of April. Mikel Arteta is still managing his minutes with the caution his nagging Achilles injury demands. But in the time Saka has been given, the impact has been immediate, decisive, and deeply encouraging for a club on the brink of making history.

What is equally notable is who has been operating behind him. Ben White, back in the starting line-up following Jurriën Timber’s ankle injury, has reunited with the player he knows better than any other — and the results have been striking.

Saka’s Return: Every Minute Counting

Against Fulham last weekend, Saka played only the first half. In those 45 minutes, he tormented the visitors throughout — setting up the opener with mesmeric wide play before smashing home Arsenal’s second himself. Those involvements ended a seven-game run without a goal or an assist.

Against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg, he lasted a little longer — just shy of the hour mark — and produced the game’s decisive moment. His goal on the stroke of half-time was the only one of the night, sending Arsenal to their first Champions League final in 20 years.

It was his ninth Champions League goal at the Emirates — a tally only two Arsenal players have ever bettered in the competition.

Arteta’s careful management of Saka’s workload appears to be paying dividends. The sharpness is returning. The end product — rare among his teammates in recent weeks — is back.

White and Saka: The Partnership Arsenal Have Missed

Ben White has started more Premier League games alongside Bukayo Saka than with any other player in the division — 111 appearances together. The mutual understanding they have developed over years of playing in the same right-sided corridor is not something that can be replicated quickly or easily.

Against both Fulham and Atlético Madrid, Arsenal’s ball progression came heavily down the right-hand side, reflecting Saka’s influence on the shape of the team’s attacking play. And in both matches, White was the primary source of passes into his winger.

Against Atlético, Saka received more passes from White than from any other teammate. The pattern was identical against Fulham, where the White-to-Saka combination was the most frequent route into Arsenal’s most dangerous player.

These are not simple sideways passes or routine recycling of possession. White’s delivery to Saka has included genuinely penetrative balls — slide-rule passes behind or in front of the Atlético defensive block, and incisive inside passes that created space just outside the opposition box. The variety and quality of White’s distribution distinguishes these combinations from standard full-back-to-winger exchanges.

White vs Timber: The Passing Data Tells a Clear Story

For most of this season, Saka has operated with Jurriën Timber at right-back behind him. Timber has been excellent — effectively ever-present until his ankle injury in March, which has kept him sidelined for the last 11 matches.

But the passing data between Saka and White, compared to Saka and Timber, reveals something important about the nature of the White-Saka connection.

Despite receiving 177 passes from Timber across the Premier League season — more than from any other player — Saka’s chances generated from those deliveries totalled 0.41 xG. White, in just four starts together and only 40 passes, has generated almost exactly the same xG (0.43). More strikingly, White’s passes to Saka have been progressive passes at roughly twice the rate of Timber’s.

Timber offers qualities White does not — physicality, versatility across multiple positions, and a significant set-piece threat. But when it comes to getting the ball to Bukayo Saka in dangerous positions, White appears to have an edge that the data underlines.

The Bigger Picture: Arsenal on the Brink of History

Arteta’s hand was forced by Timber’s injury. White, who had spent much of the earlier part of the campaign as an unused substitute, stepped into a starting role that had not been his for months.

He has responded emphatically. The reunion with Saka has coincided with two of Arsenal’s most important results of the season: a 3-0 Premier League victory over Fulham that maintained their title charge, and a 1-0 win over Atlético Madrid that booked their place in the Champions League final.

Arsenal are now fighting on two fronts simultaneously — the Premier League title race and a Champions League final in Budapest. The combination of Saka returning to form, White providing the platform behind him, and Myles Lewis-Skelly impressing in midfield has given the squad a renewed cohesion at exactly the moment it is most needed.

For Arsenal, this could be the greatest season in the club’s modern history. The right-hand side partnership of Saka and White, reunited by necessity and thriving through familiarity, may well be central to whether that potential is fully realised.
