Dearest readers, Bridgerton is expanding its world once again. Netflix has green-lit a prequel that goes back to the love story behind the family’s matriarch and patriarch, and the first familiar face has already stepped forward. Arséma Thomas says she’s returning as Lady Danbury.

What We Know So Far?

The untitled series chronicles the early life of young Lady Violet and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. Shonda Rhimes co-writes, showruns and executive produces alongside Nicholas Nardini, who worked on Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. It’s the first show Rhimes has written since Queen Charlotte.

The Book Behind It

Unlike Queen Charlotte, which was an original story, this prequel has source material. Violet in Bloom is a roughly 50-page novella from Quinn’s The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After. It covers Violet’s childhood on the Ledger estate with her bitter parents, and her romance with Edmund, who is warm and courteous where her parents were cold and distant.

It’s not clear whether Netflix will adapt it directly, and the TV franchise has already diverged. In Queen Charlotte, Lord Ledger has an affair with a young Lady Danbury, and he is portrayed more warmly than in the novella.
