Brentford are set to sign Jordan Henderson on a two-year deal following his departure from Ajax. The 35-year-old England international—best known for his legendary stint at Liverpool—has agreed to return to the Premier League, where he aims to rekindle his form and possibly secure a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
This high-profile transfer brings experience, leadership, and tactical depth to Brentford, especially after the departure of their former captain Christian Norgaard, who recently sealed a switch to Arsenal.
Henderson’s Journey: From Anfield to Amsterdam, Now Brentford
After leaving Liverpool in 2023—where he won every major club honor, including the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup—Henderson ventured into the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq. However, the move was short-lived. Just six months later, he joined Ajax in January 2024, where he made over 50 appearances and played a vital role in their late title chase.
Despite Ajax narrowly missing out on the Eredivisie crown to PSV Eindhoven on the final day, Henderson’s impact was undeniable. He led the team in key midfield metrics and stood out as a creative and defensive force.

Why Brentford? Why Now?
Though interest in Henderson was strong across England and Europe—Brentford’s offer gave him the chance to:
- Remain in the Premier League.
- Step into a leadership role immediately.
- Play consistently at a competitive level to remain in England’s plans.
Brentford, meanwhile, have pulled off a coup. They’re getting a seasoned winner to fill Christian Norgaard’s massive void in the midfield.
What Henderson Brings to Brentford
1. Experience & Leadership
With 84 international caps and over a decade at Liverpool, Henderson brings world-class experience.
2. Tactical Versatility
He can play as a holding midfielder, box-to-box engine, or even an advanced playmaker.
3. Big-Game Mentality
Having captained Liverpool to Champions League and Premier League titles, Henderson knows what it takes to perform under pressure.
Replacing Norgaard’s Defensive Shield
Replacing Norgaard is no easy task. The Danish midfielder led the Premier League in interceptions since 2021 (201), with 844 recoveries and 189 tackles won—ranking top three in each category.
Henderson, though older, has shown he still possesses the tools. At Ajax, he topped the charts in chances created, completed passes, and defensive contributions for midfielders.
