In contrast, Android phones have had a history of limited support, often ending after three years.

However, the Android landscape is evolving. As people keep their phones longer, manufacturers are recognizing the importance of building brand loyalty and customer satisfaction. Led by Samsung and even surpassing Apple’s standards, many Android companies now offer support extending over five years. Here’s a snapshot of how different brands have improved their software support policies in 2023:

Samsung (Up to 5 years of updates)

OS Update

Samsung led the charge by offering four years of Android OS upgrades and five years of security patches for select devices, extending even to mid-range phones.

OnePlus (Up to 5 years of updates)

OnePlus now promises four OS upgrades and five years of security updates for flagship devices released in 2023 and beyond.

Oppo (Up to 5 years of updates)

Oppo ensures four years of major Android updates and five years of security patches for its flagship Find series, with variations for other series.

Xiaomi (Up to 5 years of updates)

Xiaomi extends its software support, particularly for flagships, with four years of Android OS upgrades and five years of security patches.

Google (Up to 7 years of updates)

Google’s Pixel devices provide five years of major OS updates, but the upcoming Pixel 8 series plans to offer five years of Android OS updates.

Realme (Up to 4 years of updates)

Realme maintains support for most phones with at least two Android versions and three years of security patches, with some models receiving even longer support.

Vivo (Up to 3 years of updates)

Vivo commits to up to four years of support for its latest flagships, while other devices may receive fewer updates.

Nothing (Up to 3 years of updates)

Nothing offers three years of Android OS updates and four years of security updates for its flagship phones.

Motorola (Up to 3 years of updates)

Motorola’s foldable Razr series gets three years of Android updates and four years of security updates, while its other devices receive varying support.
