When Quentin Tarantino wrote Cliff Booth into Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he created one of cinema’s most quietly magnetic characters in years. Now, Brad Pitt is reprising the role — and with David Fincher directing and Netflix backing it, The Adventures of Cliff Booth is shaping up to be one of August 2026’s biggest talking points.

What Is the Film About?
The Adventures of Cliff Booth picks up approximately eight years after the events of Tarantino’s 2019 original — with Booth now working as a Hollywood studio fixer, navigating the shadows and secrets of the industry he once served as a stunt double. It’s a premise that opens Booth’s story in directions the original film never touched, and the talent behind the camera makes it impossible to dismiss.
David Fincher directing a Tarantino script is arguably one of the most exciting director-writer pairings imaginable — Fincher’s cold precision applied to Tarantino’s character-rich, dialogue-driven world. The ensemble cast including Elizabeth Debicki, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Timothy Olyphant signals serious ambition.
That said, reaction to the trailer has been mixed. Some fans see the film as an unnecessary stretch — Booth’s story felt complete within the original, and a spin-off risks diminishing the mystique that made him so compelling. However, films that underwhelmed in early previews have often surprised on release, and the creative trio of Pitt, Fincher, and Tarantino is too formidable to write off.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood won two Academy Awards at the 92nd ceremony — Brad Pitt took home Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Cliff Booth, and the film won Best Original Screenplay. The sequel carries the full weight of those expectations while attempting to carve its own identity.
