At PAX East 2025, Gearbox, the developer behind Borderlands 4, shared fresh insights into the highly anticipated looter-shooter sequel. One of the heavy areas of emphasis during the panel was on the co-op experience of the last generation, where the series was infamously criticised on. Gearbox aims to address these problems in Borderlands 4 with several quality of life improvements.

Borderlands 4 Launches September 12 with Dynamic Co-Op, New Vault Hunters, and Better Loot System
Among the confirmed features that will be must-try out are instanced loot for every player. Building on that, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford also confirmed that Borderlands 4 will include dynamically scaled difficulty in co-op, tailored individually to each player. This helps to keep the game challenging and balanced for everyone, regardless of how skilled players are or what their character progression status is.
Other new features include redesigned lobby systems, the ability to drop in and drop out from other players’ games, and faster co-op to fast-travel to friends, meant to make joining or leaving games less clunky and frustrating than in the previous game. Pitchford stressed the studio’s commitment to co-op play, which he calls a “religion” at Gearbox. According to him, it will be easier than ever for players to connect, no need to wait for hours playing before unlocking co-op, for example.” Instead, pals can come and go from games as they please without disrupting the fun.
The panel also described a simplified loot system. Unlike Borderlands 3, which was drowning in Legendary weapons, Borderlands 4 will offer a more focused, meaningful loot chase. And also, there were two new Vault Hunters unveiled: Harlowe the Gravitar and Amon the Forge Knight, to add to the already revealed Vex and Rafa. This gives players more character diversity than just having familiar archetypes, such as Sirens and Exo-soldiers. Borderlands 4 is scheduled to launch on September 12 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and the new Switch 2. Still, game prices are going up all around, and not even Priceford can say for sure whether it will sell for $70 or fetch the new $80 price.
