Manchester United’s failed transfers under Louis Van Gaal

0

Louis Van Gaal took over Manchester United in 2014 following the dismissal of David Moyes. United was in a transition period and it was just a year after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

The Dutchman rolled off an eye-watering shopping list of the world’s biggest stars in the Season Preview issue of FourFourTwo magazine, which will be released on Wednesday, August 26.

Van Gaal told: “I wanted Robert Lewandowski, but when this proved difficult I tried to get Gonzalo Higuain instead. Before I had arrived, I also spoke with the board about Neymar. If you are at United, you have to think big – he was also interesting for the club in terms of selling shirts, and I wanted to have quick wingers.”

“For that reason, I also tried to get Sadio Mane and Riyad Mahrez. Thomas Muller was on my wish list, too, and in central midfield, I wanted N’Golo Kante. I even tried to sign James Milner, who was already quite old but very multifunctional and possessed leadership skills.”

“For the defence, I wanted Sergio Ramos and Mats Hummels, because ours wasn’t the strongest in building from the back. Those were my top targets, but we couldn’t get any of them. I don’t know why, because as the manager I wasn’t involved in any negotiations.”

“After I left, players like Mahrez and Kante ended up at Manchester City and Chelsea, while United couldn’t get them. I found that very odd.”

Van Gall further revealed that when he was in talks with United officials in Belgium about his job, he made his visions and intentions clear. United promised him a squad overhaul but it didn’t quite meet his expectations as they brought in Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria ignoring Val Gaal’s transfer wishlist.

Van Gaal explained: “I met with them in Brussels – clubs often organise talks in foreign cities so the media can’t track them down easily. The Glazers and Ed Woodward were there – they asked me about everything, including my vision and how I would want to organise things, and said they would meet my needs for new players.”

“I inherited an old team that hadn’t been refreshed for some time and wanted to rejuvenate the squad with players who would bring the same kind of quality. But to get the ones I wanted proved very difficult.”

“It surprised me, even though I understand that clubs hold out for the highest fee because they know United are the richest in the world. At the same time, though, if you are the richest, you’d expect to get what you want.”

“But it didn’t happen: we only got third-, fourth- or fifth-choice players.”

It seems the current dip in form of Manchester United after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson is solely due to their board and their transfer policies and failed transfers.

AC Milan in talks with Real Madrid for Brahim Diaz

Real Madrid signed Brahim Diaz from Manchester City last season for a fee that could end up totalling €24m. The youngster didn’t get many minutes at the Bernabeu but Madrid has high hopes on the Spanish midfielder.

The LaLiga side often prefers to send their players on loan to get game time and they like to keep them in LaLiga so that they could gradually adjust to the Spanish top-flight league.

Martin Odegard was on loan at Real Sociedad while Kubo has been loaned out to Villareal for the upcoming season. Real Madrid has offers for Diaz from Getafe, Real Betis and Granada for a one-year loan deal.

Italian side AC Milan has made Brahim Diaz their top transfer target. Stefano Pioli’s side will be looking to qualify for the Europa League in the coming weeks so they want to strengthen their attacking options.

AC Milan wanted to buy the 21-year-old but Real Madrid won’t sell him without a buy-back clause and unless someone made a huge bid which is not a feasible option for Milan. So now they want to sign him on a loan deal with a buy option.

Although Real Madrid are reluctant not to include a buy option, Milan want to use their good relationship with Real Madrid (after their deal on Theo Hernandez) to influence this deal. They are also interested in Luka Jovic and Oscar Rodriguez.

Paolo Maldini is expected to meet with the Madrid senior officials in the first week of September to discuss the deals.

Xiaomi becomes the top smartphone brand in India for 3 years now

It seems that there’s no end to the Chinese smartphone giant’s supremacy in India, entering the smartphone market in 2014 and after that, the brand has not looked back since then.

Xiaomi has consistently topped the charts for 12 straight quarters and amidst this anti-China movement, the Chinese smartphone brand has also sold the most number of smartphones for Q2 2020.

It has beaten Samsung in sales with its aggressive pricing and great specs. As the market is heavily dependent online, Xiaomi has taken a huge benefit from its online sales, is the number 1 online smartphone brand for 15 quarters now.

For the last two years, it has heavily expanded offline as well and has given the heavy fight to Samsung with its entry-level smartphones for masses. In spite of all the issues with MIUI or privacy concerns, people are keen on buying Xiaomi products, just because people cannot find a good alternative.

Other smartphone brands cannot just keep up with Xiaomi’s pricing strategy and specs, the only exception being Realme. Samsung is trying a lot to recover and it has done a good job with the M series, however, it has to get a good grab over the sub Rs.10k and Rs.10k – Rs.15k price segment.

Xiaomi becomes the top smartphone brand in India for 3 years now

As we see in Manu Jain’s tweet, Xiaomi’s best-selling smartphones were their Redmi smartphones. Out of the top 5 best selling smartphones in India, 4 were from Redmi:

  • Redmi 8A Dual
  • Redmi Note 8
  • Redmi Note 9 Pro
  • Redmi 8

All of these were entry-level and budget smartphones and all of them give great specs at the prices which they come at. Also, as the COVID-19 situation has arrived, online sales have sprung, so most online models are selling hotcakes, making these Redmi smartphones best sellers on both Amazon & Flipkart.

Arthur bid goodbye to Barcelona before heading to Juventus

0

The Brazilian had been sold to Juventus as a part of the Pjanic swap deal that helped both the clubs mutually. This was obviously a bad ending, something which fans never expected but as the Barcelona board required money, they did sell a young player to bring an old one in the form of 30-year old Miralem Pjanic.

This saga even ended up badly when Arthur declined to return to Barca to train at the club and they took this even further legally. He arrived at Barcelona from Gremio in 2018 for 31 million euros plus nine in variables and he has been sold at a fee of €72m plus €10m in variables.

Pjanic was an awkward part of the deal that the board had to bear. While Arthur Melo didn’t return to play for the Champions League, Pjanic on the other hand, played out the entire season with Juve. Although, the Bosnian has been tested positive for COVID-19 and he is in self-isolation.

Arthur refuses back to get back to training, Barcelona opens disciplinary proceedings

Now, Arthur Melo has become more diplomatic and has shared a message to say goodbye to Barca:

“Saying goodbye is always hard but harder still when you leave behind a place that is my home, an incredible city that will always be in my heart, where everyone welcomed me like another Catalan,” said the Brazilian.

“They showed me a new culture and helped me grow as a player and above all, as a person. I say goodbye to an impressive group of players and feel very fortunate to have played by their side, but above all grateful for their support as friends, people with big hearts.”

“And fans who won me over from the first day and fill me with pride to be a Cule and defend one of the most important badges in football, and they have shown me love and respect that I will never forget.

“Today I have to say goodbye but I’ll take everything I’ve lived here forever in my heart. Thanks for everything, Barcelona!”

Obviously, this kind of goodbye was not that fans expected from the Brazilian but however, it is what it is and Arthur Melo will start a new journey at Turin, so we wish him good luck!

Koeman feels Pique is still needed, but Sergio Busquets may lose his regular start

0

Ronald Koeman has been busy making his team, talking to the players, deciding who to keep and who to not, along with transfers as well. Already he has told Luis Saurez that he’s not in Koeman’s plans and he also wants to get rid of Rakitic, Vidal, Umtiti, and Junior Firpo.

Now, coming to the other two senior members of the club, i.e. Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets, Koeman has talked to them as well, according to Sport.

The Dutchman has told the experienced defender that he still will be a key figure in his team and an untouchable, in the Barcelona side. However, things get a bit complex for the midfielder as he is still wanted at the club but he will no longer get the privilege as he is used to.

This means Busquets will no longer be guaranteed to start all games, especially the crucial games and he has to start from the bench, much like what both the club legends, Xavi and Iniesta did in their last days at the game.

As Sport reckons, Koeman has told Pique that he is important because of his leadership qualities at defense. The Dutch coach wants him to keep being the ‘Kaiser’ of a more intense team.

According to media reports, Koeman wants to change the 4-3-3 setup to 4-2-1-3 setup i.e. use two holding midfielders and use a creative midfielder (Coutinho or Rique). So, De Jong will be back at his traditional role at Ajax and in the national team, supported by Pjanic and occasionally by Busquets as well.

Sergio has earned a reputation at the club, playing throughout his career for Barca, so giving him the choice to end his career in a more respectful is much deserved. However, if he feels negative about the secondary role, then the club will sit down with him and talk because he has the right to decide.

Koeman is also looking to make use of the transfer market and plans to bring in these players:
