Manchester United report losses worth £30 million in Q1 of 2021

0

Manchester United have reported staggering losses worth £30 million in the first quarter of 2021. According to the financial report produced by the club, matchday revenue has dropped to $2.2 million from $40 million in the past.

The majority of it can be attributed to the absence of fans from the stadium for the majority of the season. Moreover, their merchandise store at the stadium also remained closed which sealed off revenue streams from merchandise sales as well.

The Old Trafford stayed empty for the majority of the season, with the 75,000 seats at the stadium remaining vacant. United were allowed to host 10,000 fans during the final match days of the 20/21 season. And they will be allow to extend that number to 25% of the capacity from the beginning of the 21/22 season in August.

The total revenue earned by the club depleted by 4.4% to £118.3 million. However, broadcasting revenue spiked to 125.4% due to the massive number of people watching the games from home. Manchester United also announced in April that their chairman, Ed Woodward would be stepping down at the end of 2021.

Verstappen defeats Hamilton after a great spectacle at French Grand Prix

Red Bull won their third race in a row in a thrilling French Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen passing Lewis Hamilton with two laps to go to capture his fourteenth career victory. Hamilton finished second, with Sergio Perez of Red Bull completing the podium.

In a reversal of the Spanish Grand Prix, where Mercedes out-strategized Red Bull to win, Verstappen pitted twice to Hamilton’s one, with the Dutchman then utilising his fresher tyres to narrow the gap, passing on Lap 52 of 53 to capture his third win of the season.

It more than made up for Verstappen’s loss of pole position to Hamilton at the start of the race, with Verstappen earning the win and the bonus point for best lap; marking the first time Red Bull has won three races in a row in the turbo-hybrid era.

Behind Perez, Valtteri Bottas finished a frustrated fourth after complaining to Mercedes that he was disregarded when he suggested switching to a two-stop strategy, as Red Bull did with Verstappen.

Behind the top four, McLaren’s Lando Norris finished a strong fifth, ahead of teammate Daniel Ricciardo, who had perhaps his finest race of the year to finish sixth. Pierre Gasly of AlphaTauri had a great race pace to finish P7, his best ever finish in his home Grand Prix, ahead of Fernando Alonso’s Alpine.

Sebastian Vettel finished ninth after a long first stint, while teammate Lance Stroll completed the top ten due to a late overtake on Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari – closing off a dismal day for the Scuderia, who lacked race pace at Paul Ricard, with Sainz finishing 11th and Leclerc finishing 16th.

But after a thrilling French Grand Prix, it was all about Verstappen, who claimed the lead early in the first triple header of what is shaping up to be a fantastic 2021 season, extending his advantage over Hamilton to 12 points in the drivers’ standings.

Samsung hiring ex-Apple and AMD engineers for designing a custom CPU: Rumor

0

Some reports are saying that Samsung is currently working on its custom CPU, just like Apple. But earlier, the South Korean manufacturer has shut down its in-house CPU design department. The reason is that the Mongoose cores didn’t perform better than the stock ARM designs. Similarly, famous chipset manufacturer Qualcomm also stopped making its custom chips years ago. But, Samsung is turning again into its custom chipsets.

A new report has come out saying that Samsung is hiring ex-Apple and AMD engineers for designing the custom CPU. But, it is just a rumor right now. There has been no official confirmation about it. As per choosing the ex-Apple and AMD, engineers look to be an intelligent step from Samsung as one of those played a major role as per the development process of Apple’s custom chipsets. Samsung is definitely wanting a good start in its custom chipset development.

Apparently, Samsung is not satisfied with the performance of the new Cortex-X series and is looking for something faster. The company is already working with Google to design a custom chip and with AMD to bring an RDNA2 GPU to Exynos.

Qualcomm will soon introduce a custom CPU design after acquiring Nuvia, a company founded by former Apple engineers who worked on the M1, A14 and older Apple chipsets. It seems that people who worked on Apple chips are worth their weight in gold.

It’s not clear when Samsung and Qualcomm will launch their custom designs. Nuvia reportedly was finished with its design, while Samsung is only now putting together a team. However, the Nuvia design was aimed at servers – launching it is one thing, slimming it down to fit in a smartphone’s power requirements is quite another.

Ravichandran Ashwin reveals his plan of retirement from cricket

0

Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the best spinners of India. He is regarded as a bowler who outthinks his opponents. The 34-year-old from Chennai has taken 409 Test wickets so far.

Ashwin was quoted as saying by the ICC ahead of the ongoing World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand: “The beauty about Test cricket is you are always aspiring to be perfect but you can settle for excellence, so that’s pretty much I think I do.”

“I think whatever I have achieved so far in my career is because of that attitude, did not settle for anything, constantly looking to improve.”

Ashwin revealed when he plans to retire. He said: “I maintained that if I don’t like doing different things and if I lose the patience to do something new or get satisfied, then I might not play the sport anymore.”

“It’s not like that I enjoy controversy but I enjoy a fight and that pretty much sums up why I am here. I don’t celebrate victories as much as I ideally should because for me victory is an incident and is coincidental to planning and practice. I sit and think about what can be better.”

Ashwin further added: “I don’t really read or dwell on my performances to be very honest. To be brutally honest, I just hate the fact that I am who I am because of what I do. In India, you get a lot of adulation, but I am just another normal person who finds peace and happiness playing the sport.”

“It is just absolutely wonderful that I can ply my trade and feed my family and I get paid so well. This is a sport that gives meaning for me to live.”

“I am too excited about it. I don’t time for people rating me or not rating me. It’s just another person’s opinion and that’s just brutally how I live my life.”

India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah considers Ashwin as one of the greats of the game. Bumrah said: “I think he (Ashwin) is one of the greats of the game because if you look at his record, it speaks for itself. He has done well with the bat as well as with the ball. He has taken more than 400 Test wickets, so that doesn’t come by chance.”

India’s bowling coach Bharat Arun also lavished praise on Ashwin’s work ethics and said he is never satisfied and wants to learn new things daily. Arun said: “Ashwin is not very happy with whatever he does, he always loves to come out of his comfort zone and learn new things, develop different angles and that’s what makes him so special.”

“He understands his bowling most often. What bowlers actually think they are doing are two different things, so Ashwin understands his bowling to bridge this gap.”

“So once a bowler bridges this gap, he has a bigger chance to innovate and that’s what makes (him) very special.”

The Mivi Play is an exceptional device that costs very less but looks stylish, compact and easy to carry, comes in 6 funky colors. It is a wireless speaker which is Made in India, unlike the cheaper Chinese alternatives flooding the market, Mivi even provides 1 year warranty with the product.

Mivi Play review: The Bluetooth Speaker that doesn't cost much yet gets the job done

In the Box & First Look

It comes with a cute little packaging with the speaker wrapped around a plastic, with comes paper works and you also have a small AUX cable and a micro-USB charging cable.

Design

By the looks of it, the Mivi Play is a small and compact design and is easy to carry as it weighs 164 grams. You also have an attached string to hang the speaker into something easily or just carry it easily, and it simply fits into your pocket easily.

Mivi Play review: The Bluetooth Speaker that doesn't cost much yet gets the job done

The 6 different colours make the speaker look funky, and by the looks of it, you won’t believe this costs only ₹ 799. The unique design and the colours make it look even better and is an ideal one to use for personal use or even for gifting someone.

Also, one feature lacking in low-cost speakers is that it doesn’t have any IP rating of that sort, but to my surprise, Mivi Play has an official IPX4 rating, making it both Splash Proof and Dust Proof. The Premium Matte Finish of the speaker and the sealed ports, and the smart design will make you fall in love with this tiny device.

Audio

Even though the Mivi Play costs so little, it is still a 5W Speaker built with dual audio radiators for studio-grade sound. I had honestly very little expectations of the sound to be great for the price; however, I am truly amazed at the exceptional sound quality of this tiny speaker.

Mivi Play review: The Bluetooth Speaker that doesn't cost much yet gets the job done

It rightly delivers a deep and powerful sound with a solid bass to amplify your beats, and the best part being the sound isn’t distorted even if you listen at full volume. Generally, tiny speakers like this fail even to provide enough sound for personal listening at this price range.

However, this tiny Mivi Play Bluetooth speaker is quite loud for personal music or even satisfying the needs of a small group. I also like the fact that you can use two of these speakers in Stereo Mode, and two of them can really deliver a great sound experience and wouldn’t cut your pockets at all.

Now, it is not the best sound if you consider sound details, but its highs are a bit flattened, but for normal listening, or to extend your smartphone or tab or even laptop’s speaker, it could be a good solution. The sound output and its quality are excellent for the price, and maybe this is why early users have rated 4.4 out of 5 on Amazon India.

Connectivity and Mic

The Mivi Play is also equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 that is highly appreciated for the price. This means it lets you enjoy seamless wireless connectivity, keeping your connections strong and uninterrupted.

The connection and pairing are pretty quick while there is no input lag or such, and I enjoyed the music on this without any distractions. The inbuilt mic is really helpful if you want to quickly answer calls in the middle of your music sessions and gets the job done.

Mivi Play review: The Bluetooth Speaker that doesn't cost much yet gets the job done

Battery Life

Another great thing about the Mivi Play is that it boasts a 1000mAh battery, which is again a rare sight at this budget. Though it doesn’t support fast charging, which you don’t expect for the price, I like the fact it gives up to 12 hours of battery life, which is around 8-9 hours with my testing and still, it’s perfect for the price.

Verdict

The Mivi Play Bluetooth Speaker is a great option for just ₹ 799 and could be your next option easily; it has too many good things to talk about some nitpicking. So, overall it is a highly recommended Bluetooth Speaker at a budget which has features I have never seen before for the price.

Mivi also claims this to be completely Made in India and you can proudly purchase it from Amazon India with free One-Day delivery with Prime: https://amzn.to/3zIbiPk

France set the pace in both the men’s and women’s Olympic Repechage tournament on a pulsating second day of action at Stade Louis II in Monaco

MONACO, Monaco, June 20, 2021/ — France, Hong Kong, Ireland and Samoa remain in contention in the men’s repechage while Argentina, Hong Kong, France, Kazakhstan and Russia are undefeated in the women’s tournament.

France set the pace in both the men’s and women’s Olympic Repechage tournament on a pulsating second day of action at Stade Louis II in Monaco.

Both squads won all of their matches on day two to book their place in Sunday’s play-offs and maintain their hopes of qualifying for Tokyo 2020.

Hong Kong, Ireland and Samoa will join France in the men’s play-offs, while Argentina, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan and Russia also have 100 per cent records in the women’s pool stage.

France’s men began their Pool B campaign in impressive fashion as they beat Jamaica 40-0 on Saturday morning.

The Crocs managed to restrict their opponents to two first-half tries, scored by Remi Siega and Antoine Zeghdar, but France cut loose in the second period and added further scores through Jean-Pascal Barraque, Jonathan Laugel, Sacha Valleau and Terry Bouhraoua.

Siega (twice), Zeghdar, Barraque and Laugel were on the scoresheet again when France faced Chile later on day two, while Pierre Mignot added a brace to help put the gloss on a 43-7 victory.

“We started well and that’s very important in rugby sevens,” France’s Marvin O’Connor said. “We’re really happy to be here and we’re enjoying every moment.”

France will play Hong Kong on Sunday, with the winner topping Pool B. Salom Yui Kam Shing scored two tries as the Asian team opened their repechage campaign with a 31-5 defeat of Jamaica.

Hong Kong then trailed Chile by eight points with a little more than two minutes of their second match remaining. But late tries from Shing, Russell Webb and Alex McQueen secured a 26-15 victory.

Chile and Jamaica played the final men’s match on day two, and the South Americans ran in five tries to emerge victorious 31-5.

In Pool A, Ireland suffered a setback during their opening match against Zimbabwe as they lost captain Billy Dardis to injury. But, a Terry Kennedy hat-trick ensured they started the repechage with a 31-10 win.

Kennedy added two more tries as Mexico were beaten 31-0 and another three as Tonga went down 43-0. Jordan Conroy also notched a hat-trick against the Pacific Islanders.

Samoa top the pool overnight, though, and should provide a stern test for the Irish on Sunday.

A youthful Manu Samoa Sevens squad opened with a 69-5 win against Mexico, secured regional bragging rights as they ran in seven tries to beat Tonga 47-5 and rounded their day off with a 33-7 defeat of Zimbabwe.

Tonga ended day two on a high, meanwhile, as Malakai Fekitoa’s first try for the country of his birth helped them to a 21-12 win against Mexico.

Russia had an enjoyable day in the Monaco sunshine, winning their two Pool A matches at Stade Louis II by an aggregate score of 87-0.

Samoa were the Russians’ first opponents and Baizat Khamidova scored three tries as the Pacific Islanders were beaten 32-0. Elena Zdrokova then grabbed a hat-trick of her own as Mexico were defeated 55-0.

Argentina stand between Russia and a perfect pool campaign, and the South Americans also won both of their matches on day two, beating Mexico 36-0 and Samoa 15-12.

Tunisia lead the way in Pool B at the end of day two, thanks to their impressive 46-5 defeat of Papua New Guinea, in which the African side ran in eight tries.

Kazakhstan beat Tunisia later in the day, however, as Vlada Odnoletok crossed the whitewash twice in the second half to secure a 12-0 win for Anna Yakovleva’s side.

Jamaica’s withdrawal meant that Kazakhstan had to wait until 17:00 local time for their first match, but the Asia nation will top the pool if they beat Papua New Guinea on Sunday morning.

France brought an end to the day’s action and Séraphine Okembe treated fans to a four-try performance in her side’s 47-0 victory against Colombia, which ensured Les Bleues top Pool C overnight.

David Courteix’s side, who narrowly missed out on automatic Olympic qualification via the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, started their repechage campaign in fine style against Madagascar. Lina Guerin scored three of France’s seven tries as they beat the African side 49-0.

France will play Hong Kong on Sunday, and Iain Monaghan’s side also boast a 100 per cent record going into the match.

Hong Kong began their Pool C campaign with a 31-10 win over Colombia — which featured a Chong Ka Yan hat-trick — but they found things tougher against Madagascar, recovering from 12-0 down to win 19-12.

Tokyo 2020 qualification up for grabs on final day of Olympic Repechage tournament

Two women’s teams and one men’s side will book their tickets for Tokyo 2020 as the Olympic Repechage tournament draws to a conclusion in Monaco on Sunday

MONACO, Monaco, June 20, 2021/ — We look ahead to day three of the Olympic Repechage tournament in Monaco, on which three teams will book their ticket for next month’s Olympic Games.

Two women’s teams and one men’s side will book their tickets for Tokyo 2020 as the Olympic Repechage tournament draws to a conclusion in Monaco on Sunday.

Four men’s teams remain in contention for a place at next month’s Olympic Games, while all 11 competing nations could yet reach the women’s qualifier semi-finals following an enthralling day two at Stade Louis II.

Day three will get underway at 10:41 local time (+2 GMT), when Mexico take on Samoa in the women’s repechage tournament.

Both sides have yet to win a match, but as the two third-place teams who finish the pool stage with the best records will advance to the qualifier semi-finals, victory for either would be enough to see them through.

Their Pool A rivals Russia and Argentina, who are both unbeaten, meet next on Sunday morning and the winner will top the group and ensure they avoid playing a pool winner.

Due to Jamaica’s withdrawal only one match remains to be played in Pool B of the women’s repechage, with Papua New Guinea taking on Kazakhstan at 11:47 local time.

Kazakhstan would top the pool with victory, while a PNG win would leave all three teams level on four points at the end of the pool stage.

Colombia and Madagascar are scheduled to take the Stade Louis II pitch after that match, and like Mexico and Samoa, both need the points to be in with a chance of making the qualifier semi-finals.

The final match of the women’s repechage pool stage kicks off at 12:31 local time and features another two unbeaten teams, as France and Hong Kong compete to top Pool C.

Victory in that match would give the winner a more favourable qualifier semi-final, which will take place from 14:55 local time.

The winners of those ties will advance to the qualifier finals — the first of which kicks off just over three hours later, at 18:07 local time (GMT +2) — with the two victorious teams confirming their place at next month’s Olympic Games.

Day three of the men’s repechage gets underway at 13:08 local time (GMT +2) on Sunday, with the first of three outstanding pool matches.

Pool A rivals Tonga and Zimbabwe, neither of whom can reach the qualifier semi-finals, meet in the first men’s match of the day looking to secure a second repechage victory.

The following match should have fans on the edge of their seats, as HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series core teams Samoa and Ireland compete to top Pool A.

Samoa currently lead the standings on points difference, but have lost their last two meetings with Ireland — including at the previous Olympic Repechage tournament five years ago.

Whatever the result of their match this time around, the two teams will find out the identity of their qualifier semi-final opponents when France take on Hong Kong at 13:58 local time.

France have never lost to Hong Kong at this level, winning six of the teams’ seven meetings — the other ended in a 21-21 draw at the HSBC Hong Kong Sevens in 2018.

The first men’s qualifier semi-final will kick off at 16:23 local time, with the winners progressing to the qualifier final, which is scheduled to start at 19:07 local time (GMT +2).

The victor of that match, the last tie of the Olympic Repechage tournament, will book the final ticket to Tokyo 2020.
