Online casinos thrived in 2020

Indian online gambling market is experiencing a rise in popularity in recent months. In a country where gambling is a common activity among the adult population, there are currently more players turning to online casinos, instead of traditional brick-and-mortar casinos. According to a recent survey conducted across the country, 40% of all internet users in India gamble, and specialists project India will soon surpass the United Kingdom in the number of online bettors. Gambling market researchers state that almost 80% of all adult Indians place a bet at least once a year. 

Amid the global pandemic caused by Covid-19, India’s online gambling market experienced an increase in the number of players, and online casinos are attracting punters from different states. With cities worldwide going under severe lockdowns and many land-based venues being shut down to enforce social distancing, online casinos became an attractive alternative to online bettors. According to a report recently released by Business Wire India, the online gambling industry went through a 21% rise during the early stages of the pandemic and is expected to record big profits in the following months.

While players around the globe favour online slot machines, due to their vibrant and colourful gameplay, special features like progressive jackpots and fascinating visual and audio effects, most Indian online bettors prefer classic local games like Andar Bahar and Teen Patti. These games are usually offered at online casinos that feature live dealers, streamed from luxurious studios, granting players an authentic casino experience. Indian Rummy is also very popular among Indian players, although not very common at foreign online casinos.  

Despite not being regulated in some Indian states, trustworthy online gaming sites are often licensed by strict international agencies and commissions, like Malta Gaming Authority, and are currently available for Indian punters. Additionally, players from the state of Sikkim benefit from a regulated online gambling industry, with a licensing act introduced in 2008.

Background

To better understand the gambling industry in India, it is necessary to take a look at the complex legislation behind it and the confusing regulatory framework that affected the way the market was formed.

There are three federal laws that affect gambling India, and the most prominent of these laws is the Public Gaming Act. According to it, it is illegal to operate or visit a gambling house. However, as this was introduced in 1867, there are several loopholes that enable some forms of gambling.

Unlike many other countries, traditional brick-and-mortar casinos are only allowed in certain states, and with specific games, which indicates that classic gambling is not available in all its forms, and in all cities across India. As a highly decentralized country, gambling regulation is under the jurisdiction of each state. Therefore, online casinos are allowed throughout most of India, but they are not fully regulated in most states. 

As of March 2021, only three states, Sikkim, Daman and Goa, allowed gambling in specialized venues, and other three states have banned online gambling: Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Currently, Sikkim is pursuing a regulated online gambling framework, and is pushing for a countrywide regulation of online casinos. Despite these efforts, most online casinos are provided by offshore companies that are licensed by diligent international gaming authorities like Malta Gaming Authority and the United Kingdom Gambling Commission.

Gambling market

Recently, we’ve seen a huge boost in online sports betting and online casinos in India. Researchers predict that, propelled by pandemic lockdowns and social distancing measures which made people spend more time at home, the market will reach US$1 billion in the following years. However, it is estimated that India is losing around US$140 million annually just for not having a fully regulated online casino industry.

It is also expected that offshore companies will keep operating in the Indian market and attracting customers from the region, which may eventually lead to the country implementing new gambling laws that are already being demanded by some states. This could result in a surge of online casinos all across the country, increasing the offer for Indian players, in what could be one of the biggest gambling markets in the world. Despite not having a long gambling tradition like the United Kingdom and the United States, Indians do have an affinity with sports betting and casino-style games and the opinion of younger generations on gambling has drastically changed in the last decades, so the country is expected to promptly capitalise on the gambling market.

Xiaomi will focus on fintech business throughout 2021

Xiaomi is mainly a smartphone maker for all of us. However, it is actually an electronics company that has the reach of some other businesses too. One of those is fin-tech or financial technology.

The MD of Xiaomi India, Manu Kumar Jain said the Chinese company is shifting its focus on fin-tech this year, and to execute this plan, Xiaomi will use its Mi Credit Lending service and Mi Pay application. Needless to say, India is the biggest market after China.

Last year, Xiaomi’s fin-tech business was impacted massively due to the global pandemic. The partners of it already shifted their focus to this field and gave fresh loans to the needfuls.

Manu Jain said to ET, “Last year, it was really difficult for our fintech business as post the lockdown our entire business came down to zero. The focus then for all our partners on the platform changed from giving fresh loans to ensuring the collections are happening,”

He further added, “…now that things are getting back to normal, business is slowly getting back to where it should be and we’ll soon start focusing on the growth,”

Xiaomi is planning to expand its service in our country by enabling offerings like insurance, supply change financing, and more. In case you don’t know, the smartphone maker already invested in KrazyBee, a Bengaluru-based startup in 2019.

For more financial services, the company is currently in talks with bigger banks and non-bank financial institutions.

Former 3-Point Contest champions Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors lead a field composed entirely of current NBA All-Stars who will participate in the 2021 MTN DEW® 3-Point Contest on Sunday, March 7 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The competition will take place before the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, airing on TNT.

The six-player field for the 35th MTN DEW® 3-Point Contest also features 2021 NBA All-Stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, Zach LaVine of the Chicago Bulls and Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz. This marks the first 3-Point Contest in which each participant is a current NBA All-Star.

MTN DEW returns as the title partner of the 3-Point Contest as part of PepsiCo and the NBA’s multiyear marketing partnership renewal. In addition, MTN DEW will award $100,000 in newly created MTN DEW Scholarships to two students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities during the 3-Point Contest broadcast.

The MTN DEW 3-Point Contest is a two-round, timed shooting competition at NBA All-Star 2021, which will take place on one night. TNT’s NBA All-Star coverage on March 7 will begin at 5 p.m. ET with TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by CarMax, followed by the Taco Bell® Skills Challenge and MTN DEW 3-Point Contest starting at 6:30 p.m. ET. NBA All-Star Game coverage will begin at 8 p.m. ET, with AT&T Slam Dunk taking place at halftime. NBA All-Star 2021 will reach fans in 215 countries and territories in more than 50 languages.

Booker, the 2018 MTN DEW 3-Point Contest champion, will make his fifth appearance in the event. Curry, the 2015 champion, will compete for the seventh time, tying Dale Ellis for the second-most appearances behind Craig Hodges (eight). A seven-time NBA All-Star, Curry has made a league-high 164 3-pointers this season. He holds the NBA single-season record for 3-pointers made (402 in 2015-16) and ranks second in career 3-pointers made (2,659).

LaVine and Mitchell are both former AT&T Slam Dunk champions. No player has ever won both the MTN DEW 3-Point Contest and AT&T Slam Dunk in a career. LaVine will compete in the 3-Point Contest for the second year in a row. This marks the event debut for Mitchell. Brown and Tatum are also first-time participants in the MTN DEW 3-Point Contest.

For the second consecutive year, the MTN DEW 3-Point Contest will feature the “MTN DEW Zone” – two-deep shot locations positioned equidistant between the traditional racks at the top of the 3-point arc and the adjacent “wing” rack. Each of the two ball pedestals in the MTN DEW Zone is located 6 feet behind the 3-point line and holds one special green ball, the “3-Ball.” Shots made with the green ball are worth three points.

In addition to the two shots in the MTN DEW Zone, the MTN DEW 3-Point Contest will have five main shooting locations – four racks containing four official NBA game balls (each worth one point) and one multicoloured “money” ball (worth two points), as well as one special “all money ball” rack. Every ball on the all money ball rack, which each participant can place at any of the five traditional shooting locations, is worth two points.

Each competitor will have 70 seconds (1:10) to shoot as many as the 27 balls as he can, with a maximum possible score of 40 points in a round. The three competitors with the highest scores in the first round will advance to the championship round. A new AT&T Slam Dunk champion will be crowned this year as first- time participants Anfernee Simons of the Portland Trail Blazers, Cassius Stanley of the Indiana Pacers and Obi Toppin of the New York Knicks compete for the title on Sunday, March 7 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The 36th AT&T Slam Dunk will take place at halftime of the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, airing on TNT and ESPN Radio.

AT&T Slam Dunk is part of NBA All-Star 2021, which will be held on one night. TNT’s NBA All-Star coverage on March 7 will begin at 5 p.m. ET with TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by CarMax, followed by the Taco Bell® Skills Challenge and MTN DEW® 3-Point Contest starting at 6:30 p.m. ET. Simons (pronounced SIGH-mons) is averaging 8.2 points and shooting a career-high 40.7 percent from the three-point range in his third NBA season. The 6-3 guard was selected by Portland with the 24th pick in NBA Draft 2018 presented by State Farm.

Stanley, a 6-5 rookie guard on a two-way contract, was selected by the Pacers with the 54th pick in NBA Draft 2020 presented by State Farm. He recorded a maximum vertical leap of 44 inches in the 2020 NBA Draft Combine, tied for the third-highest mark since 2000.

Toppin, a 6-9 rookie forward, was selected by the Knicks with the eighth pick in NBA Draft 2020 presented by State Farm. As a redshirt sophomore at the University of Dayton last season, Toppin led the nation in dunks and was named the consensus National Player of the Year.

Led by Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, five past AT&T Slam Dunk champions will serve as the judges. Wilkins (1985 and 1990 champion) will be joined by Dee Brown (1991), Jason Richardson (2002 and 2003), Josh Smith (2005) and Spud Webb (1986). Wilkins, Smith and Webb won their Slam Dunk titles while representing the Atlanta Hawks. Richardson won the last Slam Dunk competition in Atlanta, in 2003.

AT&T Slam Dunk will be a two-round competition. In the first round, the three competitors will perform two dunks each. The five judges will score each dunk on a scale of 6 to 10, resulting in a maximum score of 50 and a minimum score of 30. The two players with the highest combined score for their two dunks (a maximum of 100 and a minimum of 60) will advance to the final round.

In the final round, the two competitors will perform one dunk each. The winner will be determined by “Judges’ Choice” instead of individual score. WhatsApp is testing self-destructing photos to decrease privacy threat concerns

Whatsapp, the messaging and voice-over-IP service owned by Facebook, has been in news for the past few weeks. The messaging platform released a new privacy policy which is mandatory for everyone to accept.

The deadline for this new privacy policy is May 15, 2021. The new policies have been criticized by many with the fears that Whatsapp and Facebook are trying to take their personal data and store it with them.

Now a new report has surfaced which says that Whatsapp is trying to instil confidence in their users and are ready to launch new features so that their data cannot be taken away by other people. It is a feature that will self-destruct photos shared with someone after a short interval.

Few of the screenshots of this feature have been derived from WABetaInfo which shows self-destruct photos in a chat. These photos cannot be imported or copied from the chat. Though, we believe the person who is on the other side can still take a screenshot in that given time.

This looks similar to what Snapchat offers its customers as even that social media application, one can take a screengrab before the timer ends. The report says that till now, Whatsapp has not enabled the feature that the sender will be notified if any screenshot is taken by the receiver. On the other side, Snapchat does inform users about a screenshot if it is taken by a user.

Another feature that we can see coming in the future is if users leave an ongoing chat in which a self-destructing photo was sent, they won’t be able to see it again. It is still unknown whether it is Whatsapp or the sender of the photo who will decide the duration of the image. Whatsapp competitor, Telegram, has this feature of self-destruction since 2017. It also informs the sender if a screenshot is taken by the receiver.

The 19th Taco Bell® Skills Challenge is an obstacle-course competition that tests players’ dribbling, passing, agility and 3-point shooting skills

NEW YORK, United States of America, March 3, 2021/ — NBA All-Stars Julius Randle, Domantas Sabonis and Nikola Vučević in Six-Player Field; HBCU Alum Robert Covington to Make Skills Challenge Debut; Competition to Take Place on Sunday, March 7 Before 2021 NBA All-Star Game.

NBA All-Stars Luka Dončić of the Dallas Mavericks and Chris Paul of the Phoenix Suns will display their vast array of talents in the 2021 Taco Bell® Skills Challenge on Sunday, March 7 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The Taco Bell® Skills Challenge will take place before the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, airing on TNT.

Joining Dončić and Paul as 2021 NBA All-Stars in the field are New York Knicks forward Julius Randle, Indiana Pacers forward Domantas Sabonis and Orlando Magic center Nikola Vučević. The six-player competition also features Portland Trail Blazers forward Robert Covington.

Randle and Covington will make their event debuts.

Covington is in his eighth NBA season after not being selected in the 2013 NBA Draft. In the 2017-18 season, he was selected to the NBA All-Defensive First Team and ranked 11th in the league in 3-pointers made (203). Covington attended Tennessee State, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Nashville, Tenn. As part of NBA All-Star 2021, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association will commit more than $2.5 million in funds and resources toward HBCUs and support and awareness around equity and access to COVID-19 care, relief and vaccines. On March 7, the league will also pay tribute to the vital role of HBCUs through music, content and storytelling.

The Taco Bell® Skills Challenge is a three-round competition with a single-elimination tournament format. Two players will compete simultaneously on an identical course and the winner of each head-to-head matchup will advance to the next round. Two of the six participants, as chosen by the NBA, will receive a bye in the first round and automatically advance to the second round. The Prince of Johor, Tunki Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim is planning to buy the Spanish club Valencia CF.

According to Marca, Ibrahim is a relatively well-known character at Valencia ever since Peter Lim took over. However, a recent social media post hinted at a forthcoming increase in his involvement with the La Liga club.

Tunki Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim is the Prince of Johor. It is one of the 13 states into which Malaysia is divided into. According to Forbes, Ibrahim is the oldest of five children and has a family fortune valued at around €750m.

The 36-year-old Prince will inherit from his father a replica mansion from The Flintstones and a Boeing 737 valued at over €90m and painted gold. He is also the president of the Malaysian Football Federation and has ordered the construction of a 40,000 seater stadium to the cost of €200m.

He is very close to Valencia CF chief Peter Lim. Recently he expressed his desire to buy a share of Valencia CF as well.

However, the Prince also owns Johor Darul Takzim FC (Johor Tigers), the team that features the Malaysian Super League. They have also signed former Valencia playmaker Pablo Aimar in the past.

Valencia CF is in financial crisis currently after the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be good for the Spanish side in this crisis as well.

Lenovo announces its ThinkEdge SE30 and SE50 IoT embedded mini PC

Recently at the Embedded World 2021 DIGITAL virtual exhibition, the PC manufacturer Lenovo introduced an updated edge IoT embedded mini PC portfolio, including the ThinkEdge SE30 and SE50 models.

According to sources, the new models are small, fanless, and rugged, yet powerful enough to provide enterprise-level data processing, security, and scalability at the edge through the addition of Intel Tiger Lake CPUs.

Lenovo explained that its ThinkEdge SE30 model is designed for embedded applications like kiosks and ATMs for smart retail, automated production lines in manufacturing, and medical device monitoring in healthcare.

They can be powered by Core i3-1115GRE or i5-1145GRE vPro processors, which can be coupled with up to 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and up to 1 TB NVMe SSD storage.

The manufacturer has offered a robust amount of ports for the machine including:

  • 2x COM connectors
  • 3x USB-A 3.1 Gen2
  • 1x USB-A 3.1
  • 1x USB-C 3.1 Gen2 with display
  • 1x Thunderbolt 4 with display and power delivery
  • 1x DP (i5 SKU)
  • 1x HDMI (i3 SKU)
  • 2x GbE jacks and a combo audio jack

The machine also supports 4G by default, and Lenovo will offer a 5G upgrade later on. It features 2x M.2 2280 slots for storage upgrades and an M.2 2230 for a Wi-Fi / Bluetooth module.

Coming to the SE50 model, the manufacturer has not yet revealed any detailed specs about the machine. Still, Lenovo mentions that it will feature up to a Core i7 processor, up to 32 GB of RAM, up to 2 TB (SSD + HDD combo), and possibly more ports (at least 4x GbE jacks mentioned).

Lenovo announced that the model is made for versatile applications that require higher analytics and data processing at the edge to be deployed to aggregate and analyze real-time data from distributed IoT devices.

The products’ pricing is not yet known, but Lenovo will start shipping the products around mid-2021.

Epic Games announces its latest deal to purchase Mediatonic

Epic has recently been in news with some latest info about its ongoing tussle with Apple, on its attempt in branding the latter as a technological monopoly creator. But latest sources indicate that the game developer and distributor is also busy expanding its business.

According to the latest info, the Fortnite creator is acquiring video game studio Mediatonic, the maker of the smash hit Fall Guys, for an undisclosed sum. The deal was officially announced by Epic Games itself and marks one of Epic’s higher-profile acquisitions after it purchases social video app Houseparty and Rocket League developer Psyonix.

Fall Guys draws inspiration from game shows like Takeshi’s castle and Wipeout. It makes players compete in mini-games that often result in slapstick failure until only one player is left standing.

From what we know, Fall Guys will remain available on Steam for the time being, and the developer is still bringing the game to both the Xbox and Nintendo Switch platforms. Epic stated that the game will also be made to be available on the PC and will be sold on the Epic Game Store.
