Metal 3D Printing Company Velo3D to go public through SPAC merger

Velo3D and JAWS Spitfire Acquisition Corporation, a SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) have announced their decision to merge and this would list Velo3D is a publicly-traded company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) with the ticker VLE. Velo and JAWS expect the transaction to close in the second half of 2021. Velo is expected to receive $500 million in cash and private investment, through the merger, and the deal will value the company at $1.6 billion following shareholder approval.

In its investor presentation, additive metal component printing systems provider, Velo3D, has raised awareness about its finances and products, which have helped companies solve supply chain as well as design and manufacturing problems.

Velo3D’s list of customers includes Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), Aerojet Rocketdyne, and Lockheed Martin. It provides 3D printing systems to a host of such companies spanning the energy, defence aerospace, space, chip design, and other industries.

Velo’s only strategic investor in the 3D systems manufacturer’s investor presentation for its acquisition announcement was SpaceX.

The California-based company’s unique products have the capability of manufacturing components with complex internal geometries which require internal support systems. As the supports are often manufactured as part of the component, these systems introduce design constraints that end up affecting its overall performance when the movement of fluids and gasses through it takes place. According to the Verge, “Velo’s SupportFree additive manufacturing system removes the need for these supports and its software adapts the manufacturing process to specific sub-component geometries of a component.”

Velo, which sells software, manufacturing systems, and technologies, stated that its systems qualification tests for Honeywell Aerospace’s engine parts will be completed in its investor webcast in the second quarter of this year. For another unnamed jet engine manufacturer, it has also enabled the consolidation of more than 100 parts into a single part.

Its SupportFree technology has a TAM of $20 billion (Total Addressable Market) and, according to Velo’s unaudited financial data, in 2020 this segment commanded a 34% global market share for additive manufacturing.

The company has high expectations of revenue growth, it expects to earn $26 million this year and $162 million in 2023, and close to a billion in 2026. “Velo’s current operations require little capital expenditures as the bulk of its production is carried out by manufacturing partners with the company primarily responsible for quality control and final assembly.”

Sapphire XC 3D printer is also on the verge to launch in the markets, this printer from Velo allows companies to manufacture larger and a wider variety of components than its predecessor could.

Huawei has tried its extremely best to stay ahead in the market and desperately tries to get back its market share, which the Chinese tech giant lost due to the US-China trade war. As a result, we have already seen the company’s smartphone segment suffering a major set-back.

And as we have seen, the company is only focusing on releasing budget external monitors, as we have seen the case with the MateStation B515. According to fresh sources, the company is planning to release a premium monitor called the MateView.

Sources indicate that the monitor comes with a 3:2 aspect ratio. We don’t have many 3:2 external monitors, to say that they have not been adopted by the manufacturer won’t be wrong by a long shot. However, some manufacturers are slowly starting to adopt the tall aspect ratio that Microsoft champions with its Surface series.

From what we know so far, the MateView has slim bezels, giving it a modern look. The images released show that the smartphone is being recharged wirelessly, which is a nice touch.

Sources indicate that the charger will eventually meet the Qi wireless charging standard. The MateView also supports Huawei’s AI Life app. As far as other specifications go, we have no idea what the monitor will bring to the table.

Reports also indicate that the MateView can recharge devices at up to 135 W via USB Type-C. As to when or where Huawei plans to release the MateView, is still unknown.

Lenovo introduces 14e and 14w Gen 2 for remote learning warriors

Lenovo, the worlds leading PC manufacturer, introduces two education-centric devices — the Lenovo 14e Gen 2 and Lenovo 14w Gen 2. Entry-level AMD chips will power both devices.

Coming with similar specs, Both the 14e and 14w have but one outstanding difference: the 14e is a Chromebook while the 14w comes bundled with Windows 10 for Education.

According to the manufacturer, both the devices include rubber-reinforced ports and hinges, enhanced spill resistance, up to 360 ml water resistance for the keyboard, and screen protection via Corning Gorilla Glass.

Lenovo 14e Gen 2

The 14e Gen 2 is powered by the AMD Processor for Chromebooks, as to what is the model of the SKU is not yet known. AMD, last year, introduced Zen+-based Ryzen CPUs for Chromebooks, including the Ryzen 7 3700C and the Ryzen 5 3500C, so these could be the likely options. The Chromebook will come with up to 8 GB RAM and up to 64 GB of eMMC storage.

The display options come in 14-inch HD non-touch and FHD touch and non-touch panels. The spec list suggests that the FHD touch panel can offer up to 300 nits brightness. The device is also powered by a 57 Wh battery slated to offer up to 10 hours of battery life.

Lenovo 14w Gen 2

The specs of the Lenovo 14w Gen 2 are very much similar to the 14e Gen 2 but offer Windows 10 for Education instead of Chrome OS. But, reports indicate that the Lenovo 14w is powered by the AMD 3015e dual-core processor, and comes with Radeon RX Vega 3 integrated graphics.

The remaining specifications are similar to the 14e Gen 2, but, the 14w Gen 2 also offers the option of choosing between 128 GB eMMC and 256 GB M.2 SSD storage. The Lenovo 14w Gen 2 will be available from May 2021 at prices starting from US$334.

Mozilla has recently launched the Firefox 87 for Macs, Windows, and Linux machines which brings an important new intelligent tracker blocking mechanism – SmartBlock.

Since 2015, Mozilla has been focusing on providing a strong privacy option, thus included the built-in Content Blocking feature that operates in Private Browsing windows and Strict Tracking Protection Mode. 

This helped to automatically block third-party scripts, images, and other content from being loaded from cross-site tracking companies. However, Mozilla has realized that this feature could end up blocking legitimate elements of websites that can affect the overall experience.

Here’s what they have stated in their official blog:

In building these extra-strong privacy protections in Private Browsing windows and Strict Mode, we have been confronted with a fundamental problem: introducing a policy that outright blocks trackers on the web inevitably risks blocking components that are essential for some websites to function properly. This can result in images not appearing, features not working, poor performance, or even the entire page not loading at all.

So, to solve this problem, the new Firefox 87 is now introducing a new privacy feature called SmartBlock. It ensures that strong privacy protections in Firefox are accompanied by a great web browsing experience during Firefox Private Browsing and Strict Mode.

It does this by providing local stand-ins for blocked third-party tracking scripts and Mozilla has confirmed these stand-ins are bundled with Firefox and no actual third-party content from the trackers are loaded at all.

According to developers, in Firefox 87, SmartBlock will silently stand-in for a number of common scripts classified as trackers on the Disconnect Tracking Protection List, helping to improve performance while browsing.

SK Hynix CEO suggests a merger between RAM and CPUs

The RAM standards, later this year, are transitioning to the DDR5 era that brings improvements and considerable performance boost compared to DDR4. However, DDR (Double Data Rate) and its faster GDDR (Graphics Double Data Rate) relative are not really that fast compared to the HBM (Hgh-Bandwidth Memory) standard, which, according to Seok-Hee Lee, Chief Executive Officer of SK Hynix, could be the foundation for the natural merger between CPUs and RAM.

At the International Reliability Physics Symposium of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Lee presented his vision for a faster memory standard that would require a “convergence of memory and logic.” He presented a more gradual evolution starting with HBM:

“As the speed was increased in high-bandwidth memory by increasing the number of channels between the CPU and the memory, the speed will increase further in Processing Near Memory (PNM), where both the CPU and the memory exist within a single module. The speed will further increase in Processing In Memory (PIM), where the CPU and the memory exist within a single package. Ultimately, speed will increase further in Computing in Memory(CIM), where the CPU and the memory is integrated within a single die, to deliver high-performance computing system.”

The South Korean memory semiconductor supplier, SK Hynix, is currently the second-largest memory maker in the world, but any other type of chips like CPUs are not manufactured by the company. Thus, CEO Lee calls for a “strategic partnership” between semiconductor giants in order to form an ecosystem that can sustain the new CPU+RAM hybrids and “shape a new era, which pursues both economic and social value.”

Lee also presented a new standard called Compute Express Link (CXL) that could complement the PCIe bus (high-speed serial computer expansion bus standard). The CXL memory has the capability of moving data faster and in a more systematic manner between CPU and graphics / compute accelerators or smart network interfaces. 

“CXL memory is being prepared as a solution that not only expands bandwidth and capacity but also realizes the value of a persistent memory, […] a solution to narrow the gap between the memory performance and the industry requirements.”

Last but not least, Lee mentioned the efforts that are being made to improve the NAND memory chips(a type of nonvolatile storage technology that does not require power to retain data) integrated into SSD storage solutions. With the jump to 10 nm nodes and below, the Icheon-based company may eventually be able to produce 600-layer NAND chips, which should greatly increase storage capacity and data transfer speeds over the current 176-layer cap.
