Intel Raptor Lake Non-K CPUs gets listed Online

0

Intel was supposed to formally unveil its 13th Generation Core ‘Raptor Lake’ CPUs at CES on January 5, but according to a listing noticed by @momomo us, at least one European store expects to start selling the parts on January 3, 2023. Retailers are also preparing to begin selling Intel B760 and H770-based motherboards, albeit some of those platforms will be available much later.

The leaked listing not only exposes the new CPUs’ purported launch date as well as preliminary pricing (prices may be exaggerated due to the early listing), but also general configurations of the upcoming 13th Generation Core processors. Of course, we’re dealing with unofficial information, so proceed with caution.

The standard SKUs will continue to include 24 cores, including eight high-performance Raptor Cove cores and 16 energy-efficient Goldmont cores, just as the unlocked 13th Gen Core i9-series. The primary distinction between Core i7 ‘Raptor Lake’ and ‘Alder Lake’ components is that the former features four more energy efficient cores. With more cores and faster clock speeds, the new chips will almost surely rank among the top CPUs for gaming.

Meanwhile, the main difference between Core i5 ‘Raptor Lake’ and ‘Alder Lake’ processors is that the newer ones will include four or six Goldmont cores, when the previous ones did not. With four extra cores, Core i5 CPUs will be significantly more competitive in multi-threaded applications. The Core i5-13500 appears to be the most competitive, with 14 cores (6P+8E) at a price of €320 ($282 without VAT). In comparison, 13th Gen Core i3 components will not include any processing engines but will still include four high-performance cores.

Prices for the new 13th Generation Core ‘Raptor Lake’ desktop parts appear to be fairly costly.

However, there are a few factors to keep in mind here. To begin with, prices in Europe are normally slightly more than costs in the United States. Second, retailers who advertise new parts before of formal availability in order to attract early adopters often charge a premium.

We cannot state that Intel B760 and Intel H770-based motherboards for LGA1700 processors are cheap, as they all cost well over €200/$200. Meanwhile, the majority of the listed motherboards support low-cost DDR4 memory, thus systems based on the upcoming 13th Generation Core ‘Raptor Lake’ processor will be reasonably priced. This is especially crucial because they compete against AMD’s Ryzen 7000-series processors, which only support DDR5, and AMD’s partners have yet to offer low-cost AM5 motherboards.

Intel’s non-K 13th Generation Core processor lineup for mainstream and compact PCs is expected to contain 17 SKUs with 35W and 65W processor base power (PBP) and CPU models using Raptor Lake B0, Alder Lake C0, or Alder Lake H0 stepping dies. The European shop now lists just 65W machines, which is understandable given that Intel normally sells such SKUs before 35W chips.

Intel is rumored to have canceled off its Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPU line

0

OneRaichu has spread new speculations about the Intel Core Desktop CPU family, claiming that Meteor Lake may not be available in the LGA 1851 socket. There were suspicions that Intel might cancel Meteor Lake CPUs for desktop release, and it appears that those rumours may be real. According to OneRaichu, who has previously been highly accurate with his leaks, the Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs may not ship on desktop platforms but will still be going to the mobility segment.

However, with Intel Meteor Lake-S supposedly cancelled, it appears that we will need to adjust our knowledge of the Intel Desktop Core portfolio. As a result, Intel intends to debut the Raptor Lake Refresh CPU family in 2023, which will replace existing processors with higher core clocks and an improved technology to enable better power delivery. According to the most recent roadmap, they will be compatible with all existing LGA 1700/1800 socketed motherboards. This would imply that the existing CPU socket would last three generations.

However, the LGA 1700/1800 socket will not be the only one that lasts three generations. According to rumours, the next-generation LGA 1851 socket will handle at least three generations of CPUs. Since MTL (Meteor Lake-S) is no longer in the picture, the three families we may anticipate to see on the next socket are Arrow Lake-S (ARL-S), a probable Arrow Lake Refresh, and Panther Lake (PNL-S).

The Intel 15th Generation Arrow Lake-S Desktop CPUs will retain the 24 cores found on Raptor Lake CPUs today. The Arrow Lake-S top die will support up to 24 cores, with 8 Performance Cores and 16 Efficiency Cores.

According to prior rumours, the range will only include Core i7 and Core i9 processors. The CPU will keep the Intel 4 (CPU) + TSMC N3 (GPU) SKU node configuration. It is claimed that the 20A node will not be included in the PC lineup.

Switching from two to three families per socket appears to be a positive move by Intel to keep the desktop battlefield hot with competition. It has also benefited the blue team in comparison to AMD. It is also stated that the Royal Cove core architecture, which is predicted to provide enormous performance and IPC increases, will not be available until the generation following Panther Lake, which is expected to be Nova Lake and will be available in 2025 or later.

According to prior sources, Intel is working on a new socket known as “V” that will handle at least two generations of desktop CPUs, Arrow Lake-S and its updates, as well as future products. This LGA 1851 socket will have dimensions similar to the existing LGA 1700/1800 socket, but will have additional pins and support for new/improved functionality.

During a recent investor call, Intel stated that its Intel 4 and Intel 3 products are progressing quite well. The 14th Gen Meteor Lake production stepping is slated to be delivered this quarter, with volume ramping in 2023, while Intel 3 is also expected to begin early production by the end of 2023.

Apple had to reportedly reject a new GPU for iPhone 14 Pro due to “Unprecedented” errors

According to The Information, Apple planned a big generational boost for the graphics capabilities of the iPhone 14 Pro, but was forced to reject plans for the new GPU late in production due to “unprecedented” errors.

The Information claimed in a paywall story that Apple engineers were “too ambitious” in adding new features to the graphics processor built for the iPhone 14 Pro, including ray tracing – a lighting method used to provide a higher level of realism in games. This meant that the iPhone 14 Pro prototype drew far more power than intended, compromising the device’s battery life and thermal management.

According to numerous people with first-hand knowledge of the incident who spoke to The Information, Apple identified the problem in the iPhone 14 Pro’s GPU late in the device’s development cycle, forcing it to quickly pivot to revert substantially to the GPU from the previous year’s iPhone 13 series.

Apple

The incident is said to be unprecedented in Apple’s chip design history, and it is the reason why the iPhone 14 Pro displays only minor increases in graphics performance compared to previous iPhone generations.

The blunder caused Apple to restructure its graphics processor team and remove some managers from the project, including key players who aided Apple’s development as a chip design leader.

According to the source, Apple’s chip design team has had to deal with a loss of talent in recent years, with the business losing dozens of important personnel to other silicon design companies since 2019, as well as interpersonal feuds and disputes with chip startups.

Huawei files patent for EUV scanner rumored to be used for sub-7nm process development

0

According to UDN, Huawei has filed a patent application for an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography scanner. If the company can create such a scanner while maintaining reasonable productivity, uptime, and yields, Chinese chipmakers may be able to produce semiconductors on sub-7nm-class technologies.

Huawei filed a patent application with the State Intellectual Property Office in mid-November for an EUV scanner and its core components. According to MyDrivers, the patent application number is 202110524685X.

According to descriptions published by various media sources, the patent application appears to cover all critical components of an EUV scanner, including a 13.5 nm EUV light generator (light source), a set of reflecting mirrors, the lithography system, and ‘control management technologies’.

Filing a patent does not imply being able to build an EUV scanner, which is a highly complex system with several cutting-edge components that must perform flawlessly in tandem and for extended periods of time. Furthermore, even with an EUV tool at their disposal, chipmakers must still determine the proper pellicles for masks, resists, and a variety of other high-volume manufacturing requirements.

A 0.33 numerical aperture EUV scanner is the apex of today’s semiconductor production tools.

EUV scanner
credit: tomshardware

Many firms attempted to create such a tool, but only ASML succeeded after more than ten years of development and financial support from Intel, Samsung, and TSMC. Currently, Samsung, SK Hynix, and TSMC actively use ASML EUV tools, but Intel has yet to begin high-volume chip production using these tools.

For the time being, only Intel, Micron, Samsung, SK Hynix, and TSMC employ or plan to use EUV scanners. Furthermore, only these five companies have created (or plan to develop) sophisticated enough process technologies to take use of EUV scanners. Meanwhile, due to the Wassenaar agreement, China-based SMIC was unable to get an already purchased EUV tool to create its own EUV-based fabrication process. As a result, it is clear that demand for EUV scanners exists in China, and Huawei appears to be keen to meet it.

Huawei, a world-class high-tech firm with approximately $100 billion in yearly revenue, pursues several aims and develops numerous technologies. The company’s semiconductor production goals are widely known, and they extend beyond chip fabrication to the construction of wafer fab equipment. Huawei’s WFE efforts are doing nicely, as the company has submitted for a patent covering an EUV scanner.

Premier League reveals 6 wrong decisions made by VAR this season

0

VAR in the Premier League has been the subject of controversy, based on the decisions that it has made. While wrong offsides may have been reduced to a bare minimum, the handball and penalty decisions have been very debatable to say the least.

And now, the refereeing panel has revealed at least six wrong decisions made this season.

The six wrong refereeing decisions that have been made in the Premier League this season

1. Chelsea 2-1 West Ham

Jarrod Bowen was deemed to have fouled Edouard Mendy in the build-up to Max Cornet’s goal. But, the board have said that the decision was simply wrong.

2. Newcastle United 0-0 Crystal Palace

Palace were awarded a penalty after a Lucas Digne handball early in the season. But, the panel states that the penalty should not have been awarded.

3. Crystal Palace 3-1 Aston Villa

An own goal from Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell was ruled out on the same day as Cornet’s goal was ruled out at Chelsea. A foul by Newcastle’s Joel Willock on goalkeeper Vicente Guaita caused the goal to be ruled out. However, that own goal should’ve stood.

4. Manchester United 3-1 Arsenal

A foul by Martin Odegaard on Christian Eriksen in the build-up caused Gabriel Martinelli’s opening goal to be ruled out. The board decided that this was the wrong call to have been made.

5. Fulham 3-0 Aston Villa

Headbutts in the Premier League have become a little more common nowadays. And in Steven Gerrard’s final match in charge of Aston Villa, Douglas Luiz was sent off for a headbutt on Aleksandar Mitrovic. And now, the decision has been reviewed to have been wrong.

6. Nottingham Forest 2-2 Brentford

Dean Henderson’s challenge on Yoane Wissa was not a foul, but a penalty was awarded to Brentford and was converted by Bryan Mbuemo. The Premier League review board have decided that this wasn’t a penalty either.

The App Store now offers DaVinci Resolve on iPad

0

As long as you’re using an iPad Pro M1 or M2, DaVinci Resolve for iPad is finally available on the App Store and is just as competent as its desktop counterpart. The 2GB video editing and colour grading programme is suitable for iPadOS 16 and later gadgets with the A12 Bionic chipset or more recent.

DaVinci Resolve

Some versions of older iPads could only be able to run HD projects, and older iPads won’t have all of Resolve’s features. The optimum experience may be had by using an iPad Pro M1 or M2 model, according to Blackmagic. The M1 and M2 iPads are the only ones capable of connecting an external display or editing ProRes video.

DaVinci Resolve

Although you may still connect an external keyboard and mouse for a more familiar experience, the Resolve app has been modified to accommodate the touch interface of the iPad. Users will find all the capabilities from the desktop software, such as voice isolation, magic masks powered by AI, colour correction, and editing.

The DaVinci Resolve 18 iPad app allows users to import already-existing projects. For a one-time cost of $94.99, users can purchase DaVinci Resolve Studio, which adds a number of premium features to the default programme.
