IPL 2024: MI vs KKR – Match Preview, Prediction, Team News and Fantasy XI

The Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to continue their journey in the ongoing IPL (Indian Premier League) 2024 as they take on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The two teams will clash in the 51st match of the tournament at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday, May 3.

MI vs KKR: Match Preview

The Mumbai Indians will enter the game after facing three consecutive losses and will be eager to bounce back with a victory.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Knight Riders secured a win in their previous match and currently hold a comfortable second position in the standings. The team, which has won the championship twice before, will look to maintain their winning momentum and secure their spot in the playoffs.

Interestingly, two English players with matching initials – JB and JB – could have influenced the course of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ season. The exceptional centuries by Jos Buttler (107 not out) of the Rajasthan Royals and Jonny Bairstow (108 not out) of the Punjab Kings proved pivotal. These performances prevented the Knight Riders from sealing their playoff berth earlier. Despite their efforts, the Knight Riders faced a daunting task, failing to defend 222 against the Royals and conceding a record-breaking chase of 262 for 2 against the Punjab Kings. This has left them battling for a place in the final four.

Requiring two wins from their remaining five matches, the Knight Riders find themselves teetering on the edge of securing a playoff spot, yet with significant groundwork still ahead. Furthermore, facing the Mumbai Indians twice, particularly at the Wankhede Stadium where they have historically struggled, presents a formidable challenge. Despite maintaining a consistent hold on the second position throughout the IPL season, obtaining two victories in their final five games presents both an opportunity and a hurdle. Their destiny hangs in the balance.

Expressing the uncertainty surrounding the team’s playoff prospects, KKR’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar remarked, “I wish I could confidently say that 16 points or 14 points would suffice, but it’s impossible to predict. This tournament is among the most competitive globally, spanning two months. It’s not just about the performance in the first half; the second half holds equal weight. We’ve witnessed teams at the bottom of the table excel against the table-toppers. So, it’s challenging to determine a safe threshold for qualification. I believe the more points, the better, for any team.”

While the Knight Riders’ batting has flourished this season, with Phil Salt and Sunil Narine setting the stage for imposing totals, their bowling hasn’t quite matched up, despite the presence of the formidable Mitchell Starc, IPL’s costliest acquisition at INR 24.75 crore.

“I believe our bowling could have been more effective. ‘Below par’ wouldn’t accurately describe it,” Nayar defended, particularly addressing the performance of the Australian pace bowler, who has struggled with an economy rate exceeding 11 and has only managed to take seven wickets across eight games. Starc could potentially present a formidable challenge for Rohit Sharma, especially considering Sharma’s susceptibility to left-arm pacers this season. The Australian would be well-suited to exploit this situation if the opportunity arises.

For the Mumbai Indians, the stakes are relatively low, as their best-case scenario would only allow them to reach a maximum of 14 points by winning their remaining four games, a prospect unlikely to secure them a playoff spot. However, it presents another opportunity for skipper Hardik Pandya to prove his full fitness by bowling his full quota of overs. With little to lose, the Mumbai Indians could prove to be formidable adversaries for the Knight Riders, who have been among the top-performing teams this IPL season.

In a departure from the norm, the clash between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) marks their first encounter this season, and it takes place at a venue where KKR has historically struggled. Over the years in the IPL, KKR has managed only one victory at the Wankhede against MI, which occurred back in 2012. Interestingly, Sunil Narine was the Player of the Match on that occasion for his 4 for 15, and all eyes will be on him again, this time for his explosive batting at the top of the order.

On Friday night, Narine could find several factors working in his favor: a batting-friendly pitch, short boundaries conducive to big hits, his current excellent form and confidence, favorable bounce facilitating powerful shots, and a Mumbai Indians bowling lineup that, apart from Jasprit Bumrah, isn’t instilling much confidence at the moment.

Moreover, Sunil Narine holds an impressive record against MI’s opener Rohit Sharma, having dismissed him nine times, the second-most in all T20s after Dwayne Bravo’s ten dismissals against Kieron Pollard.

While Rohit Sharma might draw inspiration from Narine’s aggressive batting style, he can also take confidence from his recent unbeaten century against CSK in Mumbai. However, much of the pre-game discussion will revolve around Rohit’s performance against left-arm quicks, against whom he has been dismissed five times out of nine encounters this IPL, averaging just 17 runs in 44 balls. It’s worth noting that Rohit has performed exceptionally against other bowlers like Mustafizur Rahman, Arshdeep Singh, Jaydev Unadkat, Spencer Johnson, and Reece Topley, without being dismissed by them, while scoring at a strike rate of 235.71.

The question remains: Can Mitchell Starc overcome his recent run of conceding runs and provide KKR with the early advantage against Rohit, potentially breaking the hoodoo at the Wankhede Stadium?

MI vs KKR: Pitch Report & Conditions

The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai tends to favor batsmen, suggesting a high-scoring encounter. Given this, teams winning the toss might opt to bowl first and chase down the total.

Expect a fiercely competitive match with KKR pushing for a playoff spot and MI playing without pressure. The toss will play a significant role, especially considering the potential impact of dew.

Rinku Singh and Rohit Sharma, Image Credits – MI Twitter

While dew hasn’t been as prominent as in Chennai, chasing remains the preferred choice in Mumbai. Since IPL 2021, 26 out of 42 matches have been won by the team batting second, and seven out of 11 since IPL 2023. Mumbai’s humid conditions, with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees even at 11 pm, make bowling second a challenging proposition.

MI vs KKR: Team News and Impact Player Strategy

Mumbai Indians

The Mumbai Indians have been alternating between Suryakumar Yadav and Nuwan Thushara in recent games, a trend likely to continue.

Jasprit Bumrah is expected to lead the bowling attack, aiming to make early breakthroughs against KKR’s formidable opening duo, Phil Salt and Sunil Narine, who have been in excellent form.

Predicted XII:

  1. Ishan Kishan (wk)
  2. Rohit Sharma
  3. Suryakumar Yadav
  4. Tilak Varma
  5. Hardik Pandya (capt)
  6. Nehal Wadhera
  7. Tim David
  8. Mohammad Nabi
  9. Piyush Chawla
  10. Gerald Coetzee/Luke Wood
  11. Jasprit Bumrah
  12. Nuwan Thushara

Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR will face this match without both Ranas, as Harshit serves a one-game suspension and Nitish, who appeared only in the opening game before sustaining a hand injury, is still working on his fitness, hoping to return soon. In Harshit’s absence, Vaibhav Arora might find a place in the XI.

KKR’s strategy of incorporating Impact Players based on opposition continues, seen in selections like Suyash Sharma against RCB, Anukul Roy on slower tracks against right-hand heavy teams like PBKS, or Vaibhav Arora against Rajasthan Royals. Against Mumbai at Wankhede, they are likely to rely on Narine, Starc, and Varun Chakravarty as their primary bowlers and choose an impact option based on the prevailing conditions.

Mitchell Starc is expected to target Rohit Sharma, who has struggled against left-arm pacers this season, being dismissed five times in 10 games.

Predicted XII:

  1. Phil Salt
  2. Sunil Narine
  3. Angkrish Raghuvanshi
  4. Shreyas Iyer
  5. Venkatesh Iyer
  6. Rinku Singh
  7. Andre Russell
  8. Ramandeep Singh
  9. Dushmantha Chameera/Mitchell Starc
  10. Varun Chakravarthy
  11. Vaibhav Arora
  12. Anukul Roy/Suyash Sharma.

MI vs KKR: Players Under The Spotlight

MI- Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah has been a standout performer in this IPL, not only for his wicket-taking ability but also for his remarkable economy rate of 6.40 in what has been the most high-scoring IPL season to date. However, despite his consistency, he has only managed one wicket in the last three games. MI will rely heavily on him once again to provide early breakthroughs. It’s possible that opposing teams have been playing cautiously against Bumrah to target the other bowlers who have leaked runs, and how Bumrah counters this tactic will be intriguing to watch.

KKR- Venkatesh Iyer

Venkatesh Iyer hasn’t quite replicated his form from last year, where he scored 404 runs at a strike rate of 145.84, even while recovering from an ankle injury. Despite the scoring rates increasing across teams and venues this season, he hasn’t been able to make a significant impact. He appeared unsettled early on in the record game against PBKS on a flat Eden Gardens pitch. With another flat deck expected in Mumbai, Venkatesh will be eager to improve upon his current strike rate of 146.66 this season.

0

SRH have ended Rajasthan Royals’ streak of winning all four away matches this IPL season, defeating them by one run in an incredible game. Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Glenn Powell with two runs to win from the final delivery to seal two points for the home team, and cap off an incredible performance.

Travis Head bounced back with a half century before he was eventually bowled out by Avesh Khan. Nitish Kumar Reddy played an impressive, unbeaten 76 while Heinrich Klaasen played an unbeaten 42 to help SRH pass the 200-run mark once again this season.

SRH defeat RR by 1 run in incredible IPL thriller

Bhuvneshwar Kumar helped Hyderabad get off to a great start, dismissing Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson in the very first over. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag both scored half centuries to get Rajasthan’s run chase back on track.

However, Jaiswal had a lapse of judgement as he played himself off before Parag was caught on the boundary, going for the long shot. The 18th and 19th over proved to be the game changer for SRH, with Nataranjan and Pat Cummins taking key wickets to swing the tide in their favour.

Even though RR were able to take several doubles in the final over, Kumar had the last laugh with the LBW in the final delivery.

0

Virat Kohli has been named #1 in the list of the top 100 athletes in the world for 2024, becoming the only cricketer to be named in Ranker’s list. The 35-year-old has been joined by football icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on the list as well.

Ronaldo is on number two in the list, while Messi ranks third in the list. Novak Djokovic is fourth, and is followed by Erling Haaland of Manchester City and Norway, completing the top five.

Virat Kohli named the best athlete in the world for 2024

The 35-year-old has been named in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup, after an incredible start to the 2024 IPL. Until recently, he held the orange cap, for having the most runs in the IPL before being surpassed by Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Kohli remains a fan favourite for his incredible dedication and commitment to the sport and his athleticism in spite of his age. The RCB batter is still showing that he is at the top of his game, and is fully deserving of a place at the top of the list.

The rest of the list includes prominent athletes from other sports including Max Verstappen, Nikola Jokic, Shohei Ohtani and Steph Curry.

Ralf Rangnick rejects Bayern Munich head coach offer

Ralf Rangnick has rejected Bayern Munich’s offer to recruit him as the new head coach. The Austria national team manager has cited personal reasons as the reason behind his decision to not join the Bavarians.

“I’m the Austrian team coach with all my heart. This is not a rejection of Bayern, but rather a decision for my team and our common goals”, Rangnick said. As a result, the club will need to continue their search for a new head coach with Thomas Tuchel leaving at the end of the season.

Ralf Rangnick turns down Bayern Munich’s offer

First, Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso was the preferred choice for the club, before he committed to the new Bundesliga champions. Unai Emery was also on Bayern’s list, but he signed a new contract with Aston Villa until 2027, ending all speculation for a move.

Now, with Ralf Rangnick rejecting Bayern, the club could turn to Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi. However, there are other names on the list for Bayern to pursue.

Rangnick, on the other hand, will lead Austria into the European Championships this summer, in what will be a huge opportunity for the former Leipzig and Manchester United manager.

Bayern Munich and Real Madrid’s Starting Line-ups

Bayern Munich opted for their customary 4-2-3-1 setup, with Manuel Neuer guarding the goal. The defensive line featured Mazraoui, Dier, Kim Min-Jae, and captain Joshua Kimmich, stationed as the right back. Just ahead of them, Leon Goretzka and Konrad Laimer formed the double pivot, balancing offensive and defensive responsibilities adeptly. Musiala and Sané were tasked with creating havoc on the flanks, while Thomas Müller and Harry Kane were assigned to engage Madrid’s defenders centrally.

Meanwhile, the visiting Real Madrid continued with Ancelotti’s preferred 4-4-2 diamond formation, showcasing their tactical versatility and knack for generating scoring opportunities. Andriy Lunin retained his place in goal, with Thibaut Courtois still sidelined due to injury.

The defensive quartet remained unchanged, comprising Mendy, Rüdiger, Nacho, and Lucas Vázquez, filling in for the suspended Carvajal. In midfield, the lineup consisted of Toni Kroos, Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouaméni, and Jude Bellingham, offering a blend of experience and youthful energy. Leading the attacking line were the dynamic duo of Rodrygo and Vinícius Junior, with Bellingham and Rodrygo occasionally swapping positions during the game.

Tactical Brilliance in Bayern Munich’s Attack: Showing Variability

Bayern Munich immediately asserted their dominance in the fixture, largely due to Thomas Tuchel’s astute setup aimed at exploiting the entire final third. The crucial role of Bayern’s double pivot became apparent in their build-up play, as Laimer and Goretzka’s movement often confounded the marking of Real Madrid’s forwards.

By maintaining varied positioning, with Goretzka often pushing forward, Bayern forced Madrid’s high defensive line to make difficult decisions between pressuring the midfield or the center backs. This confusion allowed players like Laimer to drop back, creating numerical advantages on one side of the pitch while leaving space for the central defender and wing-back on the opposite flank. For instance, Eric Dier could exploit the left flank while Madrid scrambled to readjust their defensive shape after being pulled towards the opposite side.

Meanwhile, with Mazraoui and Kimmich providing width higher up the flanks, Bayern posed an immediate threat. Musiala and Sane had the freedom to drift inside to the half-spaces, allowing them to play closer to Müller and Kane and facilitate crucial interchanges to penetrate the defensive lines. This flexibility was evident when Rüdiger found himself torn between tracking Sane’s run or granting Kane space at the edge of the penalty area, ultimately leading to an early scoring opportunity for the German winger.

Tuchel’s Tactical Masterstroke

Despite Bayern’s initial attacking endeavors proving futile and Real Madrid taking the lead into halftime, Tuchel orchestrated a pivotal change that swung the momentum back in Bayern’s favor. The decision to swap positions between Musiala and Sané allowed them to capitalize on their stronger foot while driving towards the center of the pitch. However, Tuchel’s halftime substitution arguably had an even greater impact.

Introducing Guerreiro for Goretzka shifted Bayern to a 4-3-3 formation in possession, with Konrad Laimer assuming the role of the lone pivot after an outstanding defensive display. This adjustment prompted Müller to drop deeper, forming a dynamic duo with Guerreiro as the advanced central midfielders, thereby posing additional challenges for Madrid in the midfield battle. By stretching Madrid’s narrow defensive line, Bayern found more space to exploit out wide.

This tactical shift played a crucial role in both of Bayern’s goals. Müller’s adept manipulation of Madrid’s defensive line created a clear 1v1 opportunity for Sané, who capitalized by cutting inside and finding the back of the net past Lunin. Meanwhile, Guerreiro’s intelligent off-the-ball movement between Rüdiger and Vázquez created ample space for Musiala on the left flank, leading to the Madrid full-back conceding a penalty in a desperate attempt to thwart the danger.

Real Madrid’s Tactical Adaptation

After withstanding Bayern’s early onslaught, Ancelotti’s squad gradually asserted themselves in the match, implementing crucial defensive adjustments that curtailed the influence of Bayern’s playmakers. During Bayern’s initial dominance, Real Madrid’s defensive lines were stretched too thin, leaving gaping spaces for Sane to exploit, while Harry Kane dropped deeper to link play.

To counter this, Kroos and Tchouaméni tightened their positioning, sticking closer to the defensive line to limit Bayern’s attacking freedom and restrict space. Real Madrid managed to achieve this without sacrificing their threat on the counter-attack, allowing them to stifle Bayern’s play and initiate rapid transitions.

In attack, the movement of Madrid’s midfielders was pivotal in breaking down Bayern’s defense. With the full-backs pushing high and wide, Kroos dropped deeper to receive the ball and shifted across to cover the vacant spaces on the flanks. This strategic adjustment enabled him to act as the deep-lying playmaker, eventually unlocking Bayern’s defense for the opening goal.

The movements of Bellingham and Tchouaméni were also instrumental in Madrid’s breakthrough, particularly in creating space for the crucial pass between Kroos and Vinícius Jr. Tchouaméni’s forward run drew Konrad Laimer, opening up the passing lane for Kroos to find Vinícius Jr. Meanwhile, Bellingham’s presence in the final third distracted Kim Min-Jae, allowing Vinícius Jr. to gain an advantage. The subsequent defensive scramble proved futile, as Vinícius Jr. calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Reckless Defending Haunts Bayern

Kim Min-Jae found himself under scrutiny as the culprit for both of Real Madrid’s goals, reflecting a night of overly aggressive defending from Bayern’s back line. In a match with significant implications for the season, Bayern’s central defensive pairing seemed to succumb to the pressure of the occasion. Kim’s positional lapses failed to anticipate the intricate play between Madrid’s Brazilian forwards, leading to his desperate foul on Rodrygo in the penalty area.

Bayern narrowly escaped further punishment, as their center-backs attempted to press high and restrict space for Madrid’s attackers. However, Eric Dier’s aggressive attempt to win an aerial duel against Valverde left him exposed, allowing Bellingham to exploit the vacated space. This nearly resulted in a penalty for Madrid after a last-ditch foul by Mazraoui.

The decision to adopt an aggressive stance may have stemmed from the noticeable gap between Bayern’s double pivot and their central defenders, as evidenced in Madrid’s opening goal. This forced Kim to step up and press, but his timing was off, leading to his foul on Rodrygo. While Kim’s interception of Tchouaméni’s pass and subsequent swift counterattack showcased early success, it also highlighted a lack of maturity and recognition of the opposition’s threat. Unfortunately, this realization came too late for Bayern, as they found themselves trailing before making necessary adjustments.

Strategic Adjustments Ahead of the Second Leg

As the focus shifts to the upcoming clash in Madrid, the scales tip in favor of the home team, with Bayern perhaps ruing missed opportunities as the tie stands at 2-2. The first leg showcased the key elements for success for both sides, but there are areas where adjustments can be made to enhance effectiveness in this crucial encounter.

Transitional play emerged as a decisive factor for both teams, with Bayern initially struggling to contain the dynamic Madrid forward line. Vinícius, in particular, repeatedly exploited space behind Bayern’s defense, highlighting the need for Bayern to minimize gaps in their defensive setup. This could be achieved by Neuer adopting a slightly higher position or by the Bayern defenders exercising caution in their pressing, opting instead for a more disciplined defensive approach to withstand Madrid’s attacking onslaught.

While Madrid enjoyed success in their attacking transitions, the defensive contribution of their forwards must improve to thwart Bayern’s offensive threats effectively. Despite Bellingham’s potential fitness concerns, Vinícius must match his defensive efforts with his attacking prowess to prevent Bayern’s midfield from dictating play. As observed in the first leg, Vinícius’s failure to track Laimer allowed the Austrian midfielder to advance and set up Sane for Bayern’s opening goal. Improving defensive diligence from the Madrid forwards will be crucial in neutralizing Bayern’s attacking moves and gaining the upper hand in the pivotal second leg.

The Marina Machans already have a replacement for Sangwan, having signed Mandar Rao Desai from East Bengal as part of their recent transfer spree. As a result they are well equipped to deal with the loss of one of their most valuable players.

FC Goa, on the other hand, will be able to play Jay Gupta in central defense, which is actually his natural position. He has been played out of position this entire season by Manolo Marquez, but has thrived in his role.

Now, Gupta might be played in central defence with the arrival of Aakash Sangwan. However, the future of Jay Gupta remains up in the air with recent links to Mohun Bagan SG.
