Blast Review: Arjun Sarja’s Martial Arts Tamil Action Thriller on Netflix Is the Masala Hit You’ve Been Waiting For

Sometimes you just want a film that does exactly what it promises on the tin — pure, unapologetic, high-octane action. Blast, now streaming on Netflix, is precisely that. Arjun Sarja, the undisputed Action King of Tamil cinema, is back to remind everyone why that title still fits perfectly.

What Is Blast About?

At its heart, Blast is a family action entertainer. Arjun Sarja plays Rajaram — a karate master living a wholesome middle-class life with his wife Neelaveni (Abhirami) and their daughter Nila (Preity Mukhundhan), a fearless IT professional and martial artist in her own right. Their peaceful existence is shattered when corporate tycoon Varun Dhayalan launches a destructive mining project near a hillside village, backed by a network of powerful associates and a brutal enforcer named Abraham. When the family’s path crosses with these forces, they don’t step back — they step up. What follows is a series of intense, high-energy confrontations that keep the pace brisk and the punches landing.

What Works Brilliantly

The action is the star here. The choreography is crisp, the speed-ramping is used with precision rather than overindulgence, and the martial arts sequences carry genuine energy throughout. Ravi Basrur’s music is a significant asset, elevating both the action and the emotional beats without overwhelming either.

Debutant director Subhash K Raj shows impressive attention to detail for a first-time filmmaker, presenting key moments with real impact and keeping the tone consistent. The humor sprinkled throughout the film works well too — it lightens the mood without undercutting the tension.

The father-daughter dynamic between Rajaram and Nila is the emotional backbone of the film, and it’s written with enough warmth to make you genuinely care when the action escalates. Abhirami deserves special mention — she starts the film appearing confined to a traditional mother’s role, then quietly and confidently flips the script in a way that earns genuine applause.

What Could Have Been Better

The story follows a fairly predictable template, and the third act in particular struggles to maintain the momentum built in the first two. From a writing perspective, Blast doesn’t break new ground — but it never really tries to. If you walk in expecting a tightly plotted thriller, you might be underwhelmed. If you walk in expecting a well-executed, entertaining action film, you’ll leave very satisfied.

Blast is a solid, enjoyable Tamil action film that delivers on its core promise. Arjun Sarja is magnetic as always, Preity Mukhundhan is a genuine standout as the fierce heroine, and Abhirami brings far more to the table than the trailers suggested. It’s the kind of film that works perfectly for a no-fuss Saturday night watch on Netflix.
