BIS sets performance standards for electric vehicle batteries in India

The issue of electric vehicles catching fires has become a major cause of concern for the government. Earlier, the Centre had stated that it will attempt to bring the situation under control and will prescribe stricter standards in terms of safety and manufacturing so that such incidents do not occur. The Bureau of Indian Standards has now released standards for electric vehicle batteries.

BIS has set the standards for Lithium-ion Traction battery packs:

The increase in the popularity of electric vehicles has led to an increase in concerns with respect to their safety as well. Amid this, the BIS has officially released the standards for Test Specifications for Lithium-ion Traction Battery Packs and Systems (Performance Testing) for Electrically Propelled Road Vehicles.

The standard ISO 17855:2022 for these battery packs and systems is harmonized with ISO 12405-4:2018. These standards put forth by the regulatory agency integrate the test procedure for the basic characteristics of performance, reliability, and electrical functionality for the battery packs and systems for either high-power or high-energy applications. This standard is developed keeping in mind all the real-life scenarios for electric vehicles such as if a car is parked for a long time which may lead to the battery not being used.

It takes into account all the situations if the battery system is being shipped or stored at different temperature points which could lead to complications. Hopefully, with the development of this standard, the battery fires stop or reduce significantly.
