Some homecomings almost happen for the purest reasons imaginable. According to French outlet L’Équipe, Karim Benzema came remarkably close to returning to boyhood club Olympique Lyonnais this summer — and he was reportedly ready to do it entirely for free, purely out of love for the club and the city that made him.

A Deal Built on Emotion, Not Money

Approached directly by Lyon’s management, the 38-year-old Ballon d’Or winner expressed genuine enthusiasm at the prospect of once again wearing the club’s Rouge et Bleu colours, having come through Lyon’s academy before making his name at Real Madrid. His willingness to play without salary reflected just how much the move meant to him personally, rather than any financial motivation.

What Actually Blocked the Deal for Benzema

Despite mutual interest from all parties involved, the transfer couldn’t be finalised for two key reasons.

ObstacleDetail
Contract StatusBenzema hadn’t yet been released from Al-Hilal at the time
Saudi League Ambassador RoleRuns until 2030, restricting overseas moves
Current StatusNow free of Al-Hilal contract
Career Path SinceRetirement or another Saudi club reportedly under consideration

Even with his Al-Hilal exit now finalised, his ongoing role as a Saudi Pro League ambassador reportedly still stands in the way of any potential move to a club outside Saudi Arabia.

A Career-Long Emotional Pull

This isn’t the first time Lyon speculation has surrounded Benzema. Former representatives have previously suggested he privately dreams of one day wearing the armband at Groupama Stadium, a ground he’s actually never played at, having left for Real Madrid back in 2009 after scoring 66 goals in 148 appearances for the club.

Why It Matters

With retirement now looking like the most probable next step following his Al-Hilal exit, this near-miss with Lyon may represent one of the last realistic chances for Benzema to close his career back where it started.
