The Indian Premier League was supposed to be held in March. But it has been postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. All major sporting activities have been suspended including the T20 World Cup.

The International Cricket Council has further delayed the decision on the T20 World Cup to the next month. But the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) is still confident of hosting the Indian Premier League 2020 season.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has also written a letter to all the member states, stating that BCCI will be hosting IPL 2020.

Ganguly wrote: “The BCCI is working on all possible options to ensure that we are able to stage the IPL this year, even if it means playing the tournament in empty stadiums.”

“The fans, franchisees, players, broadcasters, sponsors and all other stakeholders are keenly looking forward to the possibility of IPL being hosted this year.”

“Recently a lot of players, both from India and other countries, participating in IPL have also shown their keenness on being a part of this year IPL. We are optimistic and the BCCI will shortly decide on the future course of action on this.”

Meanwhile, the ICC has delayed the decision. They said: “The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board today agreed to continue exploring a number of contingency plans regarding the future of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 and the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021 until next month whilst planning for delivery of the events in the scheduled window is ongoing.”

After getting Ganguly’s letter Mumbai Indians has decided to start training. Mumbai Indians is the first team to officially start their practice. The Mumbai Indian players will practice at the Reliance Stadium on the outskirts of Mumbai at Ghansoli.

The players who live in Mumbai, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Krunal Pandya, Dhawal Kulkarni, and Aditya Tare can participate if they wish to do so.

Yadav told Indian Express: “Mumbai Indians have given the option of training to us. I am eagerly looking forward to getting there. There is nothing like the feeling of holding the bat again. I have hardly stepped out of home in the last two months and have certainly missed playing.”

“We are told that all guidelines will be followed including social distancing. And that we might practice with the bowling machine and get some time to bat in the middle.”

As things are going, it seems IPL 2020 will finally be held a few months later. It will boost the players and fans morale as well as the revenue of the cricket community.
