Bayern Munich reclaimed the top spot in the Bundesliga table by defeating Borussia Dortmund 4-2 in Der Klassiker. Thomas Tuchel’s first match in charge of his new club was against his former employers, and it was a clinical showing from the home team as they seemingly ended hopes of Dortmund usurping their rivals from their monopoly over the league.
Gregor Kobel slipped up early in the game, and conceded a horrible own goal in the 13th minute following a failed clearance. But that was only the beginning of the early end for the visitors, as they were 3-0 down within ten more minutes.
Bayern Munich defeat Borussia Dortmund to go back on top of the Bundesliga
Thomas Muller scored both the second and the third goal for Bayern as Dortmund were exposed time and time again. Edin Terzic was forced into three changes by half time, but that did little to make things better for the team.
Kingsley Coman scored the fourth goal five minutes into the second half, picking out Leroy Sane with a great pass before he was found again. Coman produced a calm finish and scored the best goal of the game.
Emre Can scored a penalty in the 72nd minute, followed by a goal from Donyell Malen at the very end. But, it was too little, too late from the Schwarzgelben, who had simply too much of a deficit to overturn.
Thomas Tuchel was not overly appreciative of his side’s performance, criticizing them for being ‘sloppy’. But, it now seems like a league title is guaranteed for the new Bayern Munich boss. Moreover, he could also go after the DFB Pokal and Champions League and make it another treble winning season for Die Roten.
